The president is less popular than overall growth would predict.
The 2016 election is almost two years behind us, but arguments over why Donald Trump won havent stopped. Because Mr. Trump drew support from white voters with less formal education the white working class many attributed his victory to Americans economic anxiety.
But this narrative has obscured the true nature of Mr. Trumps coalition. On the whole, Trump voters were never extraordinarily economically distressed. And now the economically distressed are actually less likely to approve of Mr. Trumps performance as president.
(snip) [Note: Read the article to find out their survey and methodology]
Who was especially likely to report economic distress? To answer this, we combined these 14 questions into an overall index that ranges from 0-100, where 100 indicates the most distress...
This pattern was evident at every income level. Nonwhites with the same household income as whites still reported more economic distress. This was true even when comparing nonwhites with college degrees to whites without college degrees.
What about Trump voters overall? They actually reported less economic distress than those who voted for Hillary Clinton and again this was true at every income level.
(snip)
All of this squares with research using surveys conducted during the presidential campaign: economic distress was not a distinguishing feature of Mr. Trumps support, especially compared to attitudes about race and immigration...If anything, economic distress is now a drag on Mr. Trumps support.
This matters a great deal for the upcoming midterm election: whether Americans vote for congressional candidates in the presidents party depends on the presidents popularity. So the economically distressed Americans who disapprove of Mr. Trump could very well punish his party in November.

Again, it emphasized that unchecked illegal immigration and upholding the rule of law of this land is topmost for Trump supporters.
“The president is less popular than overall growth would predict.”
They surveyed everyone working in the NY Times office to come to this conclusion!
The left will never get it!
There’s a cloud to every conservative silver lining, in the New York Crimes’ book.
Maybe some people are tired of crap because others are full of it.
They get it, but they just won’t admit it.
Actually Limbaugh sort of touched on this but from a slightly different angle last week. He was saying something about this was the first recovery and time of low unemployment he’s experienced that people need to be reminded of how well they are doing rather than simply experiencing it.
The economy is the GDP not the stock market.
Actually, I'm not so sure they do. This comment from the 'article' speaks volumes about what they think and why the country is so divided:
"Because Mr. Trump drew support from white voters with less formal education..."
The divide in this country is in many ways driven by the erroneous supposition that the opinions of those who went through the relatively homogeneous process called 'higher education' are superior to the opinions of those who didn't.
The government must get out of the free money with strings student loan business. It is really just welfare for colleges. The students are just traded like slaves.
Limbaugh wasn’t limiting it to students and debt, although that is a problem.
But this narrative has obscured the true nature of Mr. Trumps coalition. On the whole, Trump voters were never extraordinarily economically distressed. And now the economically distressed are actually less likely to approve of Mr. Trumps performance as president.
WOW! Talk about packing 10 lbs of BS in a 5 Lb bag. That was only 4 sentences. The NYT is improving its efficiency in the opinion columns. They have a formula now. Squeeze in the premise concisely right out of the gate. Then message some logic to lull the lemmings off the cliff and frogs into the pot.
7,000 words to identify what the New York Times considers white trash. Funny stuff.
I surpassed the education of these two "jernalists" in my sophomore year in high school.
what a load of....FakeNews. period.
what’s the plan?
attempt to eliminate certain segments of society from supporting Trump/GOP.
they think that if they can extract #metoo women, African Americans & millennials, Dems might win in the mid-terms.
the shift to the left is specifically aimed at attracting millennials, but might backfire with the other 2 segments.
meanwhile, African Americans are waking up to the fact Dems have used them for decades, simply to gain power, and then ignored them until the next election.
Economic Anxiety Didnt Elect Trump and It May Hurt His Party in the Midterms
Or not. Stupid premise, stupid propaganda organ. Trump WAS elected over economic anxiety, China’s been eating our lunch. Trump campaigned on changing that paradigm. Revisionist history from the Goebbles media of record.
“Economic anxiety...”
My patootie...
All it will take...is for people to check their retirement account balance just before leaving for the voting booth. Yes, it may’ve dropped slightly yesterday. But, compare it to the balance in 2016.
You’ve got to give the NYT a hand. It takes extremely warped minds to search and “find” anti-Trump ingredients in every story.
I’m surprised they didn’t slip in at least one daily climate change story in there and link it to Trump.
Oh well, the day is long, and the hurricane just passed in Florida.
Tick, tick, tick.
