Not particularly fond of Cruz, but there may be some quid pro quo going on. He is unquestionably an originalist with respect to the Constitution. If Republicans increase their Senate majority in November, then Cruz could be approved. The Senate rarely rejects one of their own. Dan Patrick would be a better team player for Team Trump than Cruz, and is perhaps the most conservative man to be elected statewide in recent Texas history.

Nobody who believes that Anwar al-Awlaki’s kids are eligible to be President can be described as an originalist.
The founders rejected “citizen at birth” in favor of the more restrictive “natural born citizen” specifically to exclude the children of foreign nationals.
If he is an originalist, then he knows he is not eligible and ran anyway because Obama got away with it.
