Carter also said an additional statement Trump issued under fire is still not as enthusiastic as it should be.
Jimmy Carter remains unimpressed with President Donald Trumps belated effort to take note of and honor the late Sen. John McCains service to the U.S.
In fact, the 93-year-old former president characterized it as at best adequate.
Carter spoke with MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday about Trumps responses after McCain ― who endured torture as a POW during the Vietnam war, served more than 45 years in Congress and was the 2008 GOP presidential nominee ― died at his home in Arizona on Saturday.
I think it was a very serious mistake Trump made, and his friends and opponents corrected him, I think, quite adequately, Carter said.
Trump in an initial tweet offered his deepest sympathies and respect to McCains family, but offered no praise for his fellow Republican, with whom he had a contentious relationship. According to The Washington Post, on Sunday Trump rejected the release of an official White House statement that would have celebrated the 81-year-old McCain as a hero,
Bipartisan criticism of Trumps seeming pettiness intensified after flags at the White House returned to full staff on Monday, less than two days after McCain had died. The White House was operating under the protocol of keeping the flag at half-staff only for a day-and-a-half following the death of a sitting member of Congress. Anything beyond that would require a presidential proclamation....

No, betraying our loyal ally the Shah and allowing insane Islamic Fundamentalists to take over Iran was a serious mistake. It’s a mistake the people of Iran and the world have been paying for for decades.
Jimmy Carter knows all about serious mistakes. He was and still is one. I can’t understand how the guy didn’t blow up that submarine he was supposedly a nuclear specialist on.
Maybe that is his problem. Too close to all that radiation.
President Carter, I wish you no ill, but I do consider you the worst president of all time.
For a sleazy politician, yes. For an honest man, no. Trump wasn’t playing the hypocrite game which they love to play and think they play so well.
Wait till folks see what we say, don’t say, and write when you slide off, Jimmy, you useless piece of ****. Those of us old enough remember. And no amount of Habitat paint, drywall, and roofing is going to cover the stench you left.
Dossier Carter. Dossier
and didnt HuffPo call McCain raciest LOL! I didnt know this was a HuffPo article.
As bad as Carter was, he can’t hold a candle to Woodrow Wilson.
Thought crimes.
Two words jimmah that put you and yours in close to proximity to the other 4 of the Keating 5 that set up McCain for ordered “crossing the aisles” on the democrats directions... for his entire congressional fake repub career.
Two words-— BCCI and Bert Lantz. See Banking and early S&L collapse scandal along with 21% interest rates that only people with CDs loved— shut down the economy. And a fake “oil shortage” with 30 oil tankers sitting off the coast of FL purposely slowing the offloading into the cracking plant in the Lauderdale area. All a fake, cooked up by you, Citibank, and .... the former House of Saud— now all gone. Remember the Sauds— they finance 80% of your damned Carter Center.
Know what they call a dick tater? Mr. Peanut.
—As bad as Carter was, he cant hold a candle to Woodrow Wilson.——
To be fair, Wilson had a stroke while in office.
Carter just “governed” as if he had one.
I wont shed a tear. I believe Jimmah is a wolf in sheeps clothing. A fake Christian.
Holy chit.
Trump’s enemies need to learn to pick their battles. Sure there is a death by a thousand cuts, and it can work to micro complain and be hysterical over EVERY.SINGLE.THING PDJT does. However, most people find it ludicrous and exhausting to hear all of the time to the point they tune it the hell out.
And if it isn’t, who cares. McCain was a f-tard, who screwed over his party every chance he got. This fake niceties bullcr@p is making me sick. Media acts like he was the second coming. He was a dik!!
Jimmy Carter himself was a serious mistake.
Jimmuh is a walking serious mistake.
STFU, peanut boy.
I went to DC in 1977 for a wedding and we walked in front of the White House. I kid you not, there were empty peanut shells all over the place.
McCain was on the whole inconsequential. He tried to be otherwise, but he ultimately failed. No one will remember McCain in twenty years.
Letting idiot Carter be President was "a serious mistake".
