Carter also said an additional statement Trump issued under fire is still not as enthusiastic as it should be.
Jimmy Carter remains unimpressed with President Donald Trumps belated effort to take note of and honor the late Sen. John McCains service to the U.S.
In fact, the 93-year-old former president characterized it as at best adequate.
Carter spoke with MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday about Trumps responses after McCain ― who endured torture as a POW during the Vietnam war, served more than 45 years in Congress and was the 2008 GOP presidential nominee ― died at his home in Arizona on Saturday.
I think it was a very serious mistake Trump made, and his friends and opponents corrected him, I think, quite adequately, Carter said.
Trump in an initial tweet offered his deepest sympathies and respect to McCains family, but offered no praise for his fellow Republican, with whom he had a contentious relationship. According to The Washington Post, on Sunday Trump rejected the release of an official White House statement that would have celebrated the 81-year-old McCain as a hero,
Bipartisan criticism of Trumps seeming pettiness intensified after flags at the White House returned to full staff on Monday, less than two days after McCain had died. What a coincidence! That’s what I call Carter’s presidency.
Jimmy, you’re next.
It will be forgotten by next week.
Doesn’t he have to fend off some rabid water bunnies?
Shut up, Jimmy.
McCain’s “accomplishments”:
Carter can go FOAD.
President Trump owes NOTHING to that “late” little man McCain. He’s already sent condolences to the family. Jimmah, go cut yer toenails........
"I didn't go to the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying that I approved of it."
Mark Twain

How many Rats did Jimmuh call out for hating Ronald Reagan the day he died and hoping he burns in hell?
You know what Jimah? Your entire presidency was a serious mistake, and that sentiment is universal from both Republicans and Democrats! I’m only sorry that the US Naval Academy produced two losers in Jimah and McLame!
I thought the first statement and following flag etiquette was sufficient.
McCain betrayed the citizens of this country multiple times.
Jimmy, just hush!
Coming from someone whose entire presidency was at best inadequate. I think that's called irony.
Barack Obama gave Osama Bin Laden a taxpayer funded respectfil islamic funeral. Not all state funerals are worth mourning.
A week from now no one is going to remember McCain or care about him.
Screw McCain.
You know what Jimah? Your entire presidency was a serious mistake,
*********
A-men.
Lighten up Jimmah. You’re wasting air again.
