This month marks the two-year anniversary of one of the most important articles ever written on journalism. On Aug. 7, 2016, after Donald Trump formally secured the Republican nomination and the general election was underway, New York Times media columnist James Rutenberg began with a question:
If youre a working journalist and you believe that Donald J. Trump is a demagogue playing to the nations worst racist and nationalistic tendencies, that he cozies up to anti-American dictators and that he would be dangerous with control of the United States nuclear codes, how the heck are you supposed to cover him?

If the Dems really wanted to defang Trump
They should just stop fighting him
He really shines and is in his game as a counterpuncher
And he blasts hypocrisy wherever it is found
What would Trump be like with no enemies?
I suspect hed get bored and find something else to do
NY press was always mean to him. He’s giving them all payback. It’s personal and I don’t care.
Worst of all, we are not allowed to question their statements and motives. They think of themselves as gods and free speech is their right and no one elses. They are a special class above and above the rest of us.
How about doing what journalists are supposed to do: collect facts, get a wide range of opinions, count actions more than rhetoric, and look at data -- economic data, polling data, black unemployment, stock market data, and foreign policy -- because all trends are positive!
Good, HangnJudge. But don’t say that too loud :- )
EXACTLY why Trump got elected. Number one reason-
People who are not racist are DONE with being called racist.
And Left aint doin nuthin but hollerin RACIST even louder.
Red Wave. #walkaway.
Whatever happened to the journo's credo? Who, what, when and why?
Bitterness is toxic, and will destroy any vessel containing it. Fight for what is right with a happy heart, without hatred for our enemies. Otherwise, we will be no different from them, and will eventually destroy ourselves.

Ray, that's a dangerously good attack point. Hit them in the humor bone!
H.L. Mencken 'One horse-laugh is worth ten-thousand syllogisms.'
“#walkaway”
The walk away movement will not all add to the Republican votes. A few may vote Republican, but the #waldaway votes will split into people who vote third party, don’t vote at all, and still end up voting for some or all Democrats. These people aren’t walking away due to ideology. They are annoyed with being lied to, called racist, or being disrespected because they are “cis*” white. To many of the #walkaway people, the Democratic party’s leftward lurch and the embrace of pure socialism is off-putting. Also, the sudden appearance of Ocasio-Cortez as a leading spokesman has highlighted the intellectual vacuum of the left. Honestly, she has been a gift. Also the appearance of “trans” and other non-traditional candidates hasn’t helped the party.
* referring or relating to people whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex. Compare with trans-.”cisgender” · “cissexism”
I think you ‘keyed’ into the subject very well.
I had some professor from Louisiana who chatted one evening class over this odd phonenmum that had occurred in Louisiana after WW II. Prior to the war, most of the three major newspapers in the state, were employing folks without a college education. The editor might have been a graduate, and maybe a couple of the prized people might have been that way....but most everyone else was without any college degree. So they tended to emphasize more on the story-telling art, rather than provoking you into some stance with fraudulent writing.
After the war, with the GI Bill...suddenly in the 1950s, you started to have guys show up and take the reporter jobs, who had degrees. Things were fine in the beginning, but by the 1970s...newspapers were set to only have degreed reporters, and you were starting to have a set view of the world from some college professor crowd. The layout, as this professor described this in early 1980s, was that you had people with no true view or understanding of the general public that they were serving.
A couple of years ago, I took to reading newspapers from the 1800s, and it surprised me on the refreshing way they told a story, and they’d do interviews with locals to make a story out of nothing. Of course, none of that happens today.
I’ve taken the surveys over the past forty years that you talk about, and said the same basic thing over Doonesbury. I’d also go and suggest a whole two-page section of editorials every Sunday...opening it up to folks, and letting real people write a 30-line piece on open topics.
My observation is that the newspaper ‘media’ is dying off, and by the end of the Trump era (Jan 2025), I think a quarter of daily papers (right now 1,286) will have dissolved. From those remaining, I think they will have more or less drifted into large scale ownership (one company, a dozen or more papers under them each). And I’ll predict some odd phenomenon will occur with a dozen kids banding together to create local news only newspapers, available only in digital format.
Well, of course - they empower him. Trump's supporters see the kind of people who are attacking him and redouble their support, knowing with certainty that he is the enemy of their enemies. If Trump's opponents took the "high road" (impossible, I know) and adopted a sober, serious platform they would do much better. But the kind of Democrats who could have done that were driven from the party long ago by the Sixties radicals who now control it. All they know is bomb-throwing - both rhetorical and real.
The purpose of modern journalism is to protect and promote the radical progressive agenda at all cost.
Obamarosa good, Orange man bad!
The MSM has long been biased. I dont remember them as being anything but hugely biased all my life and Im in my mid 40s. Its not just the news either. Hollywood and the TV shows the networks air long exhibited a Leftist bias.
That said, prior to 2008 they at least tried to somewhat hide it claiming that yes it was undeniable the had a Leftist bias but their standards of professionalism meant it didnt matter and that they reported things objectively. We knew that was BS but the mask wasnt completely cast aside until 2008. Thats when they started openly fellating Obama 24/7 damn the consequences. It wasnt just the news. For the first time in my life, the president couldnt even be joked about on air.
What Trump has done is call them on their bias. This drives them insane. The more openly they throw a temper tantrum, the more they discredit themselves even with moderates and Independents - yet they just cant help themselves....Trump knows it and plays them like a fiddle.
And - its not just that they hate him. They hate Middle America, they hate White people, they hate Christians, they hate men and they hate the South most of all. It come through in what they say and do all the time. Then the morons wonder why we hate them right back and why we refuse to listen to anything they say.
They’re hoping soon our kind will drop and die, but we’re gonna wave our Trump flag high. High!
...Good, HangnJudge. But dont say that too loud :- )
Hush, its a secret
Back to the regularly scheduled Trump bashing noise on the Left
But what really riles that partisan press is he thoroughly enjoys competing with the Fake Media. Have you ever seen his trophy room at Mar a Lago?
Right after the 2016 election, the NYT ran an announcement that they were going to reflect on what the missed to lead them to misjudge the out of the election. Some said that they were going to abandon their deliberate bias, and return to fair reporting. But, after just a few days of “reflection” they obviously decided what they had done wrong is not attack Trump enough. It was then off to the races with their open hostility and hatred. Don’t think for a minute that the ordinary Trump voter escapes their hostility and hatred, they feel that if it wasn’t for people like us, Trump wouldn’t have been elected, and therefore, they hate us even more than they hate Trump himself.
