These people are not “democratic socialists”.

Democratic Socialism is a largely defunct European model that held sway in much of Europe from the end of WW2 through the two thousands. Democratic Socialists were still nationalists.

The folks we have running for office now don’t believe in borders or national sovereignty. They are globalists as well as socialists.

Global Socialism was a term used interchangeably with Communism throughout the cold war. The two are still synonymous.

The rise of openly socialist Democratic candidates is not a product of Trump’s presidency, but an evolution of the Democratic Party that started with FDR, accelerated under George McGovern’s run for the presidency in 1972, snow balled during the Obama years and became chic with Bernie Sanders. Democrats have been lurching leftward for decades and now are morphing into “Democratic Socialists”. Trump’s election showed that a large part of the traditional Democrat base, white blue collar workers especially union workers that have reliably been Democrat voters have had enough. Hillary lost this base not because of her liberal stance, but because she was Hillary. She was seen as shrill, condescending and tired. Bernie, despite being a doddering socialist, was electrifying compared to Hillary’s tired old themes and smug expectation of being the candidate just because it was her turn. That Hillary had to resort to dirty tricks with the DNC to assure her nomination showed her weakness as a candidate.

Democrats are now so fixated on eliminating Trump in an impeachment frenzy for the 2018 election that they have no serious candidates to challenge Trump in 2020. I expect the election this fall will not give Democrats the edge to seriously proceed with impeachment and leave them leaderless going into 2020. The only excitement is these new socialist darlings. However, while some millennials might get excited by socialism just like the young crowd flocked to McGovern’s anti VietNam war movement it will not carry them to the White House in 2020. Remember McGovern lost to Nixon in an election blow out.in 1972.

This is pretty misleading. He may be the only "candidate" presently, but both houses of Congress have been full of them for quite a long time.
