Trump Would Destroy Any 2020 GOP Primary Challenger
Vice ^ | August 7, 2017 | Harry Cheadle

Conservatives have their gripes with the president, but that doesn't mean they can push him out of office.

It's exactly 200 days into Donald Trump's presidency, and the vultures have already begun to circle. According to the New York Times, prominent Republicans like Ohio governor John Kasich, US senators Tom Cotton and Ben Sasse, and even Vice President Mike Pence are courting donors and holding events in important primary states—as they would if they were going to run for president in 2020. (Pence has strenuously denied he's interested in a primary campaign.) CNN's Chris Cillizza has floated other senators, like Ted Cruz or Jeff Flake, who could mount 2020 challenges of their own against Trump. "They see weakness in this president," Senator John McCain told the Times. "Look, it's not a nice business we're in."

These stories might just indicate a certain boredom on behalf of the DC political class, with Congress in a semi-recess and Trump on a semi-vacation in New Jersey. But the fact that there's well-sourced speculation Republicans might try to unseat a president from their own party who took office less than seven months ago shows just how weak that president is. His approval rating is below 40 percent, the Republican-dominated government is being denounced for its failure to do anything, and Trump has been publicly bummed out for months. Is it so crazy to imagine that if the long-simmering Russia scandal boils over and the administration remains unpopular and dysfunctional, Trump will a viable Republican challenger in 2020?

Yes, it is. Because no matter how weak Trump may appear as a president, he would crush any primary opponent in 2020.....

I don't know about the rest of those people, but I guarantee you that Ted Cruz is not planning on running in 2020.

I suspect that Sasse will run, knowing he won’t win, but will set himself up for 2024 or 2028.

I can tell you as an Ohioan...Kasich nuked his political future with his behavior during the 2016 election season.

Au contraire ...

I can see Trump losing in 2020, even in a primary. But it wouldn’t be to a NeverTrumper - that outcome is not possible.

The Trump primary loss scenario is this: it is 2019 and it’s time for candidates to declare or get out and Hillary Clinton is not in jail. Trump could lose to an even more “Trumpian” figure who called out that most egregious of broken promises.

Other than the usurper Obama, Ted Cruz is the slimiest worm in American politics (democrats included).

If President Trump can get congress to repeal Obamacare and put Hillary on trial, I predict that he would be unstoppable in the primary and win by a landslide in the general election.

Fail one or both of those, and the betting becomes much more interesting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Only Uniparty Democrats in R jerseys want to push Trump out of office.
Conservatives are pretty happy with him.
The ones who need to be pushed out of office in 2018 are Corker, Hatch, Heller and Flake, The Amnesty Senators.
He should really reconsider...think of any of last year’s primary challengers that went more than a month or two...their monikers given by Trump will stick with them forever:
Lyin’ Ted
Little Marco
Low Energy Jeb
They will never recover. Sasse runs against Trump and gets pegged with a nickname, he will never recover. Better sit this one out.
Unless Trump chooses not to run again, he will be re-elected. “It’s the economy stupid”. There is no one who can believably out-Trump Trump.
You are mostly right. I think the candidate would lie and say they support Trump’s positions but Trump is unable to work with congress because of his personality and they could.
What if one of those’ never Trumpers’ runs 3rd party? Just think of that ‘conservative’ clown from Utah. It won’t take much. Kasich in Ohio, Flake in Az, Bush(fla). We need a whako like McGovern to get the Dem. nomination.
Ego clouds the judgment. There's a big pile of money for someone who is willing to seriously challenge Trump, if only to damage him in the General Election. That will draw someone.
They will have a whacko. Don’t worry. The problem with third party spoiler in 2020 is that Trump will be a known quantity to the overwhelming majority of conservatives and voters alike . As long as the economy is doing great, and there will be other victories, people won’t waste time on third party mcmuffins. Really the left has more to worry about regarding the green and liberaltarians.
It’s not ego when it’s real. Many better than Sasse tried last time...look what it got them. Sasse wouldn’t last one news cycle after a debate...heck he might not last past the first tweet. Ask Megyn Kelly how tangling with Trump worked out for her.
