Jason Chaffetz: Members of Congress should get $30,000 a year to help them pay rent
CNBC ^ | June 27, 2017 | Ester Bloom

The cost of housing has gotten so expensive that Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) thinks that a monthly subsidy of $2,500 would help ease the burden — for members of Congress.

He told The Hill on Monday that "I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress," given that "Washington, D.C., is one of the most expensive places in the world." He said that "a $2,500 housing allowance would be appropriate and a real help to have at least a decent quality of life in Washington."

$2,500 a month comes out to $30,000 a year. That would bring the annual Congressional salary, which is $174,000, to over $200,000. It would also cost taxpayers "roughly $16 million a year for all 535 members" of Congress, The Hill reports.....

Hey Jason, I hear Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has a Capitol Hill basement apartment to let. Rahm Emanuel lived there and paid rent, even though the house is listed as a single family, and his living there was illegal.

I used to live in Hartnett hall, which was a boarding house for young ladies working for the federal government, even had a house mother. That boarding house is now a 2 million dollar condo. These congress leeches have pushed the prices up so high nobody can afford them. Mary Landrieu was one of the worst.

"I Am starting to think that we should supply them with nice little studio apartments and cut their salaries."

Give them military style barracks in the basement of the Capitol building.... And cut their salaries.

“Chaffetz announced at the start of the congressional term, in 2009, that he would be sleeping on a cot in his office, rather than renting a Washington, D.C., apartment. Chaffetz said, “I’m trying to live the example that it doesn’t take big dollars in order to get where we want to go. I can save my family $1,500 a month by sleeping on a cot in my office as opposed to getting a fancy place that’s maybe a little bit more comfortable.” His family will continue to live in Alpine. “We are now $10 trillion in debt. $10 trillion. Those are expenses that have to be paid at some point”, he said. If he can tighten his belt in these tough economic times, Chaffetz said, Congress should be able to as well.”

"I Am starting to think that we should supply them with nice little studio apartments..."

A gymnasium filled with individual cots, and a shower room is all they deserve. Better yet, put Joe Arpaio in charge of constructing a tent city for them all. And make them wear pink underwear too!!

Dick Armey slept in his office, showered at the House gym.

I used to stay at the Super 8 Motel in Waldorf, Md. whenever I was doing research at the National Archives. It took me 20-30 minutes to drive into DC. Piece of cake.

It is true that DC has gotten incredibly expensive. The solution to that is to cut the Federal workforce and spending.

"Next time there’s a Dem majority in Congress (God forbid) they should just pass a law that DC landlords have to rent to them for $100 a month."

They could get Charlie Rangel to hook them up. He had four rent-stabilized apartments in a NY City building that he paid less than $4,000 a month for...half of what the normal rent would be.

He is leaving. Good thing too! They get paid for doing nothing and their own health plan as well! They do not need ANY increase. Most people I know must pay our bills on under $50,000 a year. Wanna trade salaries, Representative? Heck I want a pay increase in the form of repealing Obamacare and tax reform!

Quit yer bellyaching!

Great idea! Can do internet for discussions and voting and conference calls for committee meetings. Absolutely no reason for them to ever be in D.C.

That raise would be more than I get in total from S.S. Now who needs the raise? I don’t do as much as a congressman, but don’t cause near the problems either.

The average US Congressman makes about $170K annually.
Seems as though rent should be just a matter of budgeting.

What a jerk. The only reason housing is so expensive in DC is because they massively grew the size of the federal government with overpaid jobs that it caused a huge supply and demand problem. During the last economic crisis from about 2009-2012, the DC metro area was just about the only place growing with new construction in the country. Glad this guy is leaving DC...he is a blowhard that rivals Chuck Schumer in posing for a TV camera. He talks a good game, but none of the committees he led ever did anything productive.

Personally I think they should spend a lot less time in Washington and much more at home. Work from home and get away from that chummy, lobbyists infested club that alienates legislators from their people.
