The cost of housing has gotten so expensive that Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) thinks that a monthly subsidy of $2,500 would help ease the burden for members of Congress.
He told The Hill on Monday that "I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress," given that "Washington, D.C., is one of the most expensive places in the world." He said that "a $2,500 housing allowance would be appropriate and a real help to have at least a decent quality of life in Washington."
$2,500 a month comes out to $30,000 a year. That would bring the annual Congressional salary, which is $174,000, to over $200,000. It would also cost taxpayers "roughly $16 million a year for all 535 members" of Congress, The Hill reports.....

That would be the Representative from SD. She has slept in her office for her entire time in DC.
She is running for Governor of the State and leaving DC.
As with all of the elected officials in DC from the State of SD, her conservative voting record is graded “F”.
“I Am starting to think that we should supply them with nice little studio apartments and cut their salaries.”
I’ve said that only I say give them a three bedroom condo in a gated development just for members of congress. Utilities can even be paid for. I’ll admit they deserve a comfortable place to live.
Then cut the salary to the mode amount for an American family of 4.
That is a very generous pay package.
If they want more money improve the economy
Drop their salaries by $30,000 per year is where that should go.
Go home, Jason. You never amounted to much anyway.
Each state should have a compound/embassy in DC were its representatives can live rent free as a disincentive to corruption.
Yep. This is the real reason he left. However, he’ll be putting that he “served” in Congress on every resume from here on out. Jason’s gonna be just fine.
Build a dorm for them, no frills, just a bed, desk, and chairb per room. Require that all members live there when Congress is in session and that they go home to their district when it is not.
End welfare in DC. Have the welfare types have to move out. Gentrify the neighborhoods. Suddenly, lots of cheap housing.
Excellent idea!
No one forced you to run
These people are despicable. So much for lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.
When did he move to the Democrat party?
Jason needs a safe space. What a clown show.
Wonder how much health care for Critters, Senators, and their dependants cost taxpayers annually...?
It may start at $2500 a month, but they will raise that every year with a voice vote in the dead of night. In no time it will be up to $15,000, because it’s really going to be used for booze, gambling, and hush money payments to their mistresses, not for family housing.
Here’s a better idea. Have the states take over compensation for their representatives.
How about co-ed dorms in the section 8 housing area...
Glad this guy is quitting in a few days! He’s gone nutty, but I used to think he was a good guy and a tough questioner. However, he never followed through on the findings from his hearings and let the slimes slide.
As I recall, when he first entered office he had a fold-out bed in the closet in his office and that’s where he lived when in DC.
...Most of the 535 in the Legislature branch in DC have millions after only a few years there. How does that happen without lobbyists and blackmailers (to prevent airing negative info and buy votes)?
1. Build congressional billets in the DC area that are built to the same standard as barracks for enlisted military personnel. If congress wants to improve their digs, military housing has to be improved across the boards first. They can even have a day room for their little cocktail parties that are too big for their offices.
or,
2. Dock congressional salary, which I believe is already structured for maintenance of a second household, and make the stipend for DC housing a matter for the congressional district (for reps) and the state (for senators). No reason a congressman from Northern VA, South central PA, etc. should be getting the same stipend as somebody from Montana, when the former all live in easy commuting distance.
or,
Decentralize and/or eliminate all the federal offices in DC and have the agencies, contractors, lobbyists etc. move elsewhere. This will lower property values and then the poor wittle wepwesentatives can afford to pay rent without digging even deeper into taxpayer's pocket.
