In actual fact however, Republicans in the House are the key to impeachment. If enough decided Trump was doing severe damage, they might join with dems in the House to take that first step.
It would have to get pretty bad, for that.
But the Impeachment step was taken, my sense is that enough Republicans in the Senate would join dems and remove Trump, if he had not yet resigned.
The reason Republicans would join in both chambers is the Pence aspect.
I was and remain with Trump, but he is not making it easy for himself. But blame needs to go where it is deserved. The healthcare fiasco is Ryan’s thing.

As such, none of this is likely to come into play ― that is, unless there's an absolute decimation of the Republican Party in the 2018 midterm elections.
The GOP currently holds 52 seats and is only having to protect eight of them in 2018. Which means if they lost all 8, they would still hold 44, or more than enough to fend off a removal vote.
