Republican Ron Estes defeated his Democratic rival in a high-profile special congressional election in Kansas Tuesday that had been seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump.
But the narrower-than-expected outcome may worry Republicans across the country as they try to decipher how much Trump's low approval ratings might hurt his party's candidates.
Trump and former Rep. Mike Pompeo, who vacated the seat to become CIA director, had both won the district by nearly 30 percentage points in November. But Estes appears to have dramatically underperformed that margin, with early returns showing him leading Democrat James Thompson by just about 8 percentage points....

Ryan ain’t going anywhere nor should he.
He was expected to win by 30 percentage points, but just barely squeaked through with 8.
So actually he lost by 22 points!
According to my free Obamamath calculator, L-O-S-E-R!!!
Seen as Trump test when they were confident it would go against him.

I absolutely love seeing the ‘RATS piss away millions of their dollars on fools’ errands such as this race.
Welcome Congressman Estes...the Freedom Caucus awaits!
Seen As Big T-Estes-cle
Great news! Congrats!
These days 8% is HUGE!
The motivated side was Demon Rat. The Demon Rat side lost.
The Dems desperately need a win, politically. They’re also spending gobs of money on the GA 6th Congressional District race, the seat Dr. Tom Price vacated to take the Secretary of HHS position.
Was 2016 Dem loses a rejection of 8 years of BHO & Democrats. Not according to the MSM.
NBC tries to spin a Democrat loss into a moral victory!
Good point. Kudos for pointing that out. Dummocrats are grasping at straws.
Estes win by 8 points is a decided loss for Dumbocrats
They poured money into the state, pathlogically hoping to embarrass Trump.
Looks like Perez is gonna be eating humble pie.
The media still living in a bubble. Will they ever learn?
I have a friend in that district that said the closer margin had nothing to do with Trump, but the fact that Estes was a truly terrible candidate, not even campaigning, doing any sort of local media or even running ads, just assuming he would win. While the democrats where dumping millions into the race and all over both paid and free media. He said many Republican voters didn't even realize there was an election or who their candidate was until the race started getting some national attention about a week ago. (Ironically it was probably the national democrats crowing they might win, that caused them to lose.)
Exactly! This is why this election was interesting to me. The Left aren’t ever going to be MORE energized than they are now.
When I heard that “the polls show” that the Republican may not win, I wasn’t worried. I remembered the MSM saying that “the polls show” that Hillary will win in a landslide.
They’ve cried “wolf!” too many times; nobody believes them any more. They created their own demise — and good riddance to them.
I hear Estes is a stiff who ran a lousy campaign and had to be bailed out by Cruz and Trump at the last minute.
The bright side is hopefully the Supreme Court Gorsuch nomination....I say hopefully because of past "conservative" pick betrayals sitting on the court and more jobs coming to the US.
I am not very happy with the way Trump is being led by rinos and the deep state at the moment....sorry but I can see why republicans are going to have trouble in tight race areas. This was not one of those areas and there is a huge drop in the percentage of the win from the last republican. Either we see the problem and change something or we do not..... we are the stupid party so I will not hold my breath for the Trumpites to see anything amiss.
