Republican Ron Estes defeated his Democratic rival in a high-profile special congressional election in Kansas Tuesday that had been seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump.
But the narrower-than-expected outcome may worry Republicans across the country as they try to decipher how much Trump's low approval ratings might hurt his party's candidates.
Trump and former Rep. Mike Pompeo, who vacated the seat to become CIA director, had both won the district by nearly 30 percentage points in November. But Estes appears to have dramatically underperformed that margin, with early returns showing him leading Democrat James Thompson by just about 8 percentage points....

“by just about 8 percentage points....”
These guys are a riot. Anytime a dimoKKKRAT wins by that much it is considered a landslide. Good to see the Republicans hold onto the seat. The rats put a lot of time, money and effort in trying to take the seat.
VICTORY: Trump-Estes!
Apples and oranges. You can't compare an election that took place during a presidential election with a special election. What were the turnout numbers compared with the presidential election ? I am sure they were much smaller. Plus you have a new candidate running as opposed to an incumbent.
“But the narrower-than-expected outcome “ As usual, the rabid leftist media trying to make agony in the victory of winning.
Was the seat ever REALLY in jeopardy?
Decision Desk currently has the Republican at 53.3 to 44.9 for the rat.
And there were many local and state issues that energized the lefty loons and an eight point loss is the best they could do.
“Was the seat ever REALLY in jeopardy?”
The dimoKKKRATS sure thought so. They put a lot of time, money and effort into the race.
Our congress needs to get with it! Obamacare is really hurting people. Negotiate something and get on with it!
The GOP Congress seems determined to put their majority at risk by failing to back up Trump and failing to deliver quickly and clearly on promised Obamacare repeal, tax cuts, and a border wall.
Anybody know anything about the new Rep?
Does he lean conservative or will he join the Ryan Uniparty eunuchs?
Who would ever have thought they would spin this loss as a win for the democrats? /s
Lawrence and Manhattan I get, but what’s up with Wichita?
Why do the liberals and media, consider special or off year elections a referendum on a Republican president, but not a Democrat??
When Republicans won comfortable victories as governors of New Jersey and Virginia, in 2009, in Obama’s first year, nobody in the media was harping that somehow those elections were referenda on Obama. Just an observation.
Ryan has got to go!
Bingo. These fools of the stupid party never learn as the evil party continues its assult on the stupid party.
Gloom and doom with a little wishful thinking, all the time with these people.
So. Much. Winning! :)
