The right fears it. The left dreams of it. But both may be deceived in assuming demographics will change how America votes anytime soon.
Last summer, an anonymous writer by the pseudonym of Publius Decius Mus wrote in the Claremont Review of Books that electing Donald Trump was the last chance to save the United States from certain doom. Invoking one of the planes hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists on 9/11, he argued that:
2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. Youor the leader of your partymay make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees. Except one: if you dont try, death is certain.
In Publius telling, the deck is stacked against conservatives. The media and universities are opposed to their very existence, drawing young Americans to the left. The countrys demographic transformation is even more worrying: [T]he ceaseless importation of Third World foreigners, Publius wrote, means that the electorate grows more left, more Democratic at every election....
