Hillary Clinton Really Shouldn’t Have Told Voters That Trump Wasn’t a Normal Republican
New York Magazine ^ | December 23, 2016 | Eric Levitz

Hillary Clinton spent much of last summer arguing that Ronald Reagan would never vote for Donald Trump. At the Democratic National Convention, a series of speakers — including Barack Obama — argued that the patron saint of the conservative movement would recoil at Trump’s authoritarian ethos. At a September press conference, the Democratic nominee suggested that the Gipper would be incensed to see the Republican nominee praise Vladimir Putin while disparaging the American president. One of her super-PACs’ final campaign ads cast Reagan’s ghost as a Clinton surrogate.

The point of all this nostalgia for the man who killed off the New Deal consensus was to isolate the Republican nominee from his party’s upscale wing — and, thus, to engineer a landslide, bipartisan rebuke of the demagogue.

This same strategic logic shaped Clinton’s “alt-right” speech, which cast Trump as the champion of a reactionary online movement that defined itself in opposition to the mainstream conservatism. By the end of that address, Clinton had contrasted the hatefulness of Trump’s meme-savvy minions with the principled tolerance of such statesman as Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain, and House Speaker Paul Ryan.

At the time, it wasn’t hard to make a case for this gambit. After the DNC, polls showed Clinton with a solid grasp on the Democratic base and a comfortable lead in the states she’d need to win on November 8. Why not try to expand her coalition across the aisle, by assuring suburban Republicans that the vulgarian who’d commandeered their party wasn’t really one of them?

But that question was never as rhetorical as the Clinton campaign may have hoped. There was always a risk that in distancing Trump from the GOP, she would be doing him a service....

Trump’s cabinet is the most conservative in a generation. It is more conservative than Ronald Reagan’s. It is definately more conservative than the Bushs’.

Hillary Clinton spent much of last summer arguing that Ronald Reagan would never vote for Donald Trump.

She is absolutely correct. Ronald Reagan is dead and dead people always vote for democrats.

‘the conservative movement would recoil at Trump’s authoritarian ethos.’

Independents and Democrats often associate the word Republican with hypocrisy, with establishment self-absorbtion, with indifference to ordinary people.

One of Hillary's super-PAC ads cast Reagan’s ghost as a Clinton surrogate.

And who could forget the half-caste Muslim Kenyan coached to say he wanted to be "another Reagan."

Liberal - Progressives? As Reagan?

Just goes to show how low they'll stoop to gain power.

If they don’t keep believing their own lies, then everyone will be conservative.

Yeah, lots of fun stuff in the article...
“ As Chuck Schumer infamously reasoned, “For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.” “

But ‘not a clue’ of what really happened. I wonder if they even know yet?

Hillary ran a bunch of ads in Iowa featuring prominent RINOs Mitt Romney, Lindsey Graham, Charles Krauthammer, Jeb Bush, etc. - denouncing Trump. Reassured that Trump wasn’t just another Republican, Iowans handed him a comfortable victory over Hillary.

Which is why she won all three of those states and is about to be sworn-in as the first female president.

A lot of voters understood that as saying he wasn't an out-of-touch rich guy like Mitt "47%" Romney or a Federalist Society dweeb like Ted Cruz or most National Review boys, and that made them like Trump more than they otherwise would have.

You could argue that #NeverTrump Republicans won the election for Trump. They were the poison pill that Hillary couldn't help swallowing. To keep the votes of those middle of the road Republican defectors, Democrats passed up anti-Republican anti-rich guy appeals that might have won over working class White voters.

the D’s could have won, even after 8 years of Obama undermining Americans and our economy and country.

,,had they ran a decent candidate who did not show such obvious contempt for American people................and who did not lie every time she opened her mouth...........and who was not sold out (hundreds of millions of dollars) to the IslamoNazi dicatorships, etc.

HRC had to be one of the worst candidates in American political history, and the one with the most bad baggage, too

just saying.

The 2016 Presidential Election exposed the complete collapse of the Government that was envisioned by our Founders and the metamorphosis of Government into Socialism by the last century’s elected officials.

We will soon have a President who flourished as a free thinking, entrepreneur. He has lived the life for which America was created: Freedom for faith, family and pursuit of happiness. Excellence in effort produces excellence in results.
