Reagan Democrats

they THINK they are supposed to be democrats, because their family always was.

I used to be democrat because I thought my father was - I had no reason why, until I first listened to Rush Limbaugh.

I was kind of the same way. I used to vote democrat. A buddy asked "why are you voting democrat? You don't believe any of the stuff they believe. You're really a republican". He was right. That was in 1992. By 1994, I was enthusiastically voting for the republican Contract With America.

Reagan Democrats Against Mondale in 1984, Reagan only received 53.34% of the vote in PA. Too much is tied up in the large RAT cities now.

My father was a life long registered Democrat. That said, he never voted for a Democrat for President.

My mom's parents were local Democrats and National Republicans from the 20's onward and didn't care if anyone knew it. I was told things were a bit strained around national elections.

My father's father spent 30+ years in the state legislature as a Democrat. You must understand that I grew up around Governors, Senators, Congresscritters, legislators, judges, etc. It wasn't a big deal to me.

When I went down to register to vote the clerk (known to the family) marked 'Democrat' under party. I stopped her and said, "Aren't you supposed to ask me which party I wish to register for?" She asked me which party and was surprised when I said 'Republican.' She did register me anyway.

A few days later I got a call from Granddaddy asking me to stop in and see him when I could. I dropped in the next day and he asked me why I had registered Republican. I told him that the Anti-Vietnam national Democrat party just didn't represent me. I really didn't have much problem with the State level Democrats. He told me that he was glad I had thought carefully about my choice and allowed as how I was likely correct. We never spoke about me being a registered Republican again.
