Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump will make his third stop in Maine when he holds a town hall meeting in Portland on Thursday.
The real estate mogul and television personality is continuing to target the Pine Tree State as his campaign attempts to find a favorable path in the Electoral College map. So far, national pundits have predicted a difficult road because his rival Hillary Clinton has shown appeal in voting blocs that traditionally turn out in presidential elections.
However, Trump is still hoping to court disaffected Bernie Sanders supporters who flocked to the Vermont senators criticism of foreign trade deals, a message that resonated with the economic anxieties of rural voters.
A recent poll by CNN shows Clinton gaining support following last weeks Democratic National Convention. She leads Trump 45 percent to 37 percent, with two third-party candidates, Jill Stein and Gary Johnson, polling in the single digits.
While some Maine pundits were puzzled by Trumps decision to hold his event in the states liberal epicenter, he is expected to benefit from statewide media coverage. That coverage will also carry over the border into New Hampshire because the Portland media market expands into the Granite State.
Trump is also targeting a slice of one Maines four electoral votes. The state is one of just two that allows a candidate to pick up a electoral vote if he or she loses the statewide vote, but wins in one of the two Congressional Districts.
The Trump event begins at 10 a.m. at the Merrill Auditorium. Doors open at 7 a.m.
Incursion. And who could blame him? Maine in August? Like buttah.
Saw a poll that Trump is down between 2-4 points in Maine that is well within the margin of error..Trump is playing it smart..he thinks he can win these states :-)
Another thing I like about Trump, he’s working his butt off.
We need that 1 electoral vote! Keep going Trump! Keep touring but keep it on Crooked, Lying Hillary (the devil), the Wall and Nafta/TPP jobs. I saw where he had supposedly a list of companies that had left towns he had visited but then says “I don’t have to read them to you,” I think it would go over well if he read out a few and how many jobs were moved to Mexico or China. I know NC has lost a butt load of textile and furniture jobs to Asia & South of the border. If he mentions names then older folks could remind the younger folks, “oh yeah I remember so & so company, good job, good pay, things were better around here then.”
Maine has four electoral votes.
One thing that will be a factor is that this will be a long general campaign. Typically, the cenventions happen in August and get done just before Sept. Then there is a 2-month sprint to election day. This time, the conventions began a month early. August has just started and there is now a long 3-month period to election day. I think this benefits Trump much more than Hillary. She has no stamina and her health will be a concern down the stretch. Trump has more energy and that will be a growing factor as we near November.
Well if he could get all four great, but don’t see it happening, but I’ll take that one that is allowed for winning 1 of the Congressional Districts. The way state polls in USA are going now, that 1 could be make or break.
That’s Nebraska, not Maine.
I’m not sure the polls are trustworthy
There needs to be visible support, large visible support. Lawn signs, bumper stickers, etc. Everywhere.
Plus WIKILEAKS.
It’s both, even says so about Maine in the article. Check out 270towin.com, it even lets you allocate Maine & Nebraska’s partial electoral votes.
Agree, and talking with folks, I feel Trump should win this but never hurts to fight for every single opportunity. I would love to see Trumps internal polling.
The event has been moved to 2 pm.
I suspect the other larger locations were not available. I know the Sea Dogs, our minor league team is playing in Portland. Don’t know why the civic center that hold 8,000 is not being used. Merrill is a high end aud. with fixed seating.
Merrill does offer good crowd control. The entrance is on a narrow street that can be blocked on both ends.
I can assure you the mayor will not be there to welcome him.
