One of the most controversial figures in British politics says he prefers Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton.
George Galloway, the left-leaning politician who left parliament in 2015, wrote on Twitter Tuesday that he shared Susan Sarandon’s sentiments about the U.S. presidential election.
The actress and Bernie Sanders supporter last week told The Young Turks that Clinton would be "more dangerous" than Trump as president, because his ideas had no chance of being implemented.
“I believe in a way she’s more dangerous, except they’re both talking to Henry Kissinger apparently lately,” Sarandon said. "Her record — I mean, she did not learn a thing from Iraq. She is an interventionist. She’s done horrible things, horrible things, and very callously," she added. “I don’t know if she’s overcompensating or what her trip is. I think we’ll be in Iran in two seconds. That scares me. That frightens me.”
“Btw @SusanSarandon is right,” Galloway tweeted. “Hillary Clinton is even more dangerous for America and the world than is Donald Trump.”
Galloway, who was thrown out of the U.K.’s Labour Party in 2003 over the tenor of his opposition to British involvement in the Iraq War, later joined and eventually became the leader of the Respect Party, which counts democratic socialism among its ideologies. He drew especially harsh international criticism after a 1994 visit to Iraq during which he met with dictator Saddam Hussein and delivered a speech praising him.
"Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability," Galloway said. "I can honestly tell you that there was not a single person to whom I told I was coming to Iraq and hoping to meet with yourself who did not wish me to convey their heartfelt, fraternal greetings and support."
More recently, Galloway ran for mayor of London in 2016 but received just 1.4 percent of the vote.
Galloway continued on Twitter, attacking Clinton as unable to compete in a general election with Trump. He urged Sanders, who like Galloway’s Respect Party backs a policy agenda based in democratic socialism, to run a third-party campaign for president with Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein as his running mate.
“Trump is a monster. Clinton a bigger monster. And he is sure going to monster her,” Galloway wrote in a second tweet.
“Sanders should run as an Independent with @DrJillStein as his running mate @SenSanders,” he posted minutes later.
Not the kind of endorsement you want...
