After several days of speculation, possible independent candidate David French has confirmed he won’t make a run for the presidency.

Writing in the National Review on Sunday night, French revealed: “After days of prayer, reflection, and serious study of the possibilities, I am not going to run as an independent candidate for president of the United States.”

He and many other neo-cons seem to be trapped in 1995, unable to appreciate that the world has changed, the culture has changed and, most important, neo-conservatism is not so “neo” anymore.

I have been thinking this while listening to the back-and-forth between Newt and Trump. We owe a tremendous debt to Newt for forging the House majority in the '94 elections, along with the balanced budgets and welfare reform that came with it. But Newt is the last generation, the voice for the interregnum between the Cold War and the Jihadi War. He is perceptive enough to see which way the wind blows, and would make a helpful advisor for Trump who needs advisors to the "inside game," but his time as a key player has past.

First, we didn't launch the war; they did. Second, it has been like LBJ with Gen. LeMay in Vietnam: if we would have let the generals win the war, it could well have been won by now, or at least the jihadis would be cowed into being afraid to act.

Unfortunately, the way Obama has gutted the officer corps in general and the flag officers in particular, we no longer have generals and admirals who could win the war, even if a future President were willing to let them.

I dissent from the notion--if not outright fantasy--that Bill Kristol is now, or ever has been, an American Conservative. If he actually has the high IQ the writer suggests, I do not believe that it is functional--not to the extent of overcoming his emotional conditioning. He seems clearly what I would call a "dysron": One with normal or even above average intelligence, who functions at the moronic level because of his fears & compulsions.

His trick in the 90’s was to bait them into saying bad things about Israel or the Israel lobby in Washington. Many fell for it and were tarred as anti-Semites.
