House Oversight Chairwoman Karen MacBeth announced Monday she's leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican since she thinks the GOP is more aligned with serving the public interest of Rhode Islanders.
"I think it's time that the average person like me stands up and says, 'Enough,' and while I've been a voice down here, I want to be a stronger voice," she said. "And I want to be a stronger voice for the people, and if I can do this, then there's other people out there that can do it, too, because this is the only way we're going to be able to turn this around."
MacBeth has served in the House since first winning election as a Cumberland Democrat in 2008. She works as a school principal in Woonsocket.
She said her decision to switch parties was influenced by a combination of factors, including the state's losing investment in 38 Studios, under-performance of the state pension fund, and the speed with which the General Assembly approved truck tolls earlier this session.
"I think it was time for me to leave the Democratic Party ...." she said. "I feel that its become a party of politicians versus a party of the people, and I want to represent the people."

RI-gop more liberal than MASS GOP
Out, damned spot! Out, I say! One, two. Why, then, tis time to do t. Hell is murky!Fie, my lord, fie! A soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him.
Gov. Don Carcieri was not a leftist, though I was disappointed to see him endorse Socialist Willard for President. Now with the death of the Cool Moose Party standard bearer in RI, Gina Raimondo, one of the most unpopular Guvs in the nation, should be in deep trouble for 2018 against any GOP nominee (presumably Mayor Fung will try for a rematch, although I wouldn’t mind seeing Carcieri make a comeback, as he is eligible to do so).
And Lady MacBeth makes it official: She’s running against Conressman Cicilline. The RI-01 vies with MA-05 and the VT at-large seat as the second most Democrat CD in New England (behind the Boston-Cambridge heavily minority CD), so I’m not going to be looking at MacBeth in the teeth; if she’s only 50% conservative but can defeat Cicilline, I’d be ecstatic to welcome her to the GOP House caucus.
WE ARE BACK !!!!
There was a way to get on FR during the problem
