DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Donald Trump and some mainstream Republicans are engaged in a long-distance flirtation. Both sides are coming to the realization that they'll need each other if the billionaire businessman becomes the party's presidential nominee.
The GOP establishment is no fonder of Trump than when he first roiled the campaign last summer with his controversial comments about immigrants and women. But with voting beginning in just over a week, his durability atop preference polls has pushed some donors, strategists and party elders to grudgingly accept the prospect of his winning the nomination.
"We'd better stop hoping for something else and accept the possibility that he's our nominee and be prepared to rally around him if that's the case," said Fred Malek, a top Republican presidential fundraiser....

Yeah, they really need to eliminate Cruz. LOL. After today, I think he’s pretty well eliminated. Trump closing in on 60 in Reuters.
The GOPe is still holding out hope that Bush will be the nominee.
So freaking sad.
Trump don’t need no stinkin’ Republican Establishment to defeat Cruz.
If you have problems with big banks or gays, Trump is in hock to every bank in the city. Not much doubt that he is socially more liberals than Cruz.
He needs to win the Iowa caucus, though.
They may have waited too long for that. Whatever one thinks of Trump it has to be acknowledged that he is a good candidate.
Why don't you post some pics of Boehner and other various Republican establishment hacks having cocktails with leftists and not doing a damn thing about leftist policies for the past 55 years.
I remember a year ago when most people here would’ve disregarded anything from Reuters. What happened?
Really? Pray tell, how did he help them? What exactly did he do for them?
Is John Boehner running for the presidency?
SO well said!
They need each other to beat Hillary/Sanders. It has nothing to do with Cruz.
There is no way Cruz closes the gap by Iowa. So Cruz will lose Iowa then he will get beat horribly in N.H. and Trump will run the board from there. Cruz won’t win a single state.
But Trump doesn’t need the GOPe attacking him during the general election.

I’m lived in Iowa half my life. That ain’t what I’m hearing.
In 2014, Raphael Cruz joined the NRSC at the behest of Mitch McConnell.
During the flat out fraud and betrayal by the NRSC to save their GOP-E Senator vs Chris McDaniels in Mississippi, Raphael Cruz remained silent.
IMO, that demonstrates Raphael’s true GOP-Establishment heart and may have been the final straw that caused Sarah Palin to endorse Trump.
Not surprising, Raphael Cruz continues to align himself with Glenn Beck, the amnesty lovin’ kook and shamster.
So Big Corn is GOP leaders?
I think Jeb might be auditioning for Dog in the Manger. If he can’t have it, he’s not gonna let Rubio have it either.
You’re missing my point. Trump was never in a position in government where he constantly compromised, joined Gangs of 8s, and worked with Democrats to pass leftist legislation. That is why all the pics and past statements of Trump are falling on deaf ears. So it’s funny how the GOPe is suddenly concerned about electing a “moderate” for POTUS, when for decades these same moderate Republicans assisted DemoRats in the ongoing destruction of America while snookering conservatives every election cycle.
“when he was a private citizen”
When did he stop being a private citizen?
