In rural America, a startling prospect: Voters Obama lost look to Sanders

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Shelley Brannon, 62, can sum up the Obama presidency with three words. Well, three words and an exclamation.

“He screwed us,” said Brannon, a coal miner from Wise County, Va., as he sat outside a rally for the United Mine Workers of America. “Man, he screwed us.”

He shook his head under a camouflage hat that matched his camouflage UMWA T-shirt, and he described his fantasy of dumping nuclear waste in the yards of environmentalists, “if they think coal’s so bad.” He mulled over the mistake he says the UMWA made in 2008, when it endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Then he explained why he would probably be voting for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the next Democratic primary.

“For one thing, he knows what union is, and he respects it,” Brannon said. “That’s all we need is respect. He’s just a likable fellow, trustworthy. I don’t think she has the same respect for the union, and she really shot herself in the foot over, you know, all that secretive stuff.”(continued)

The people in West Virginia’s coal-country are NOT typical of rural voters throughout the country.

This article is BS.

No they aren’t. You can’t tell me rural America is turning to Bernie Sanders. They think we’ll believe anything, don’t they.

They always have. The Republicans back in the day sent in the army to break strikes, and many regions have long memories.

Sanders is a real threat, or rather his ideas are. When the middle class dream is slipping away from more and more people, class warfare looks promising.

The GOP needs to start looking at this rather than what helps the big companies. Try to make job growth instead of importing low skilled workers a priority.

Otherwise we are heading to some very rough times.

First thought I had too. It boggles the mind. Then again Mitt, Mitch and Jonbon did the same thing.

Barry - I will bankrupt the coal industry - Got Coal country votes

Mit/Mitch/Jonbon - If elected we will work with Barry / Abortion/gun control/Romneycare/Obamacare funding - Got Republican votes.

“WE” are every bit as stupid as they are.

Unions.

Labor unions are more interested in advancing the socialist agenda and lining their organizers pockets than in doing anything to help their members.

Well, he says it himself, it’s the unions. The dems pander to the unions, so the working class guys who are getting screwed by Dem policies have a misguided sense of loyalty to them.

this is a prime example of stupid not knowing they’re stupid...and that,my friends, is the foundation of the rat voting bloc.

Pragmatism.... it’s fine in small amounts. Conservatives are supposed to be the more pragmatic side, after all.

However, when you let pragmatism trump principle, you’ve gone off the deep end!

Yup. And thats exactly what happened. We saw it here with Freepers telling others that ‘Principle is the problem”.

You cannot, by definition, get further from conservatism than that statement. Most self professed ‘conservatives’ fall squarely in the moderate camp at best because principled voting and voting for principled people is seen as bad. They are no different than blacks attacking their kin in school for ‘acting white’ and then bitching about their state of affairs.
