Ames, Iowa - Donald Trump confirmed two things during a stop in this central Iowa town Saturday: He has no class and he may well run as an independent when he does not win the Republican nomination.
There had been considerable public evidence of both long before his appearance here today at the Family Leader Summit but Trump, who is leading several national polls of the Republican primary, erased any doubt with comments he made about Senator John McCain and a prospective independent bid.
Trump was answering questions from Republican pollster Frank Luntz on stage when he declared that John McCain, who spent six years as a POW in Vietnam, was not a war hero. Trump went on to express his preference for soldiers who weren’t captured, suggesting a belief that prisoners of war have some say in their captivity. Luntz had asked Trump about his reaction to McCain’s comment that Trump had stirred up the “crazies” with his candidacy. When Trump attacked McCain, Luntz asked if Trump was comfortable with that kind of criticism of a war hero.
“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” The comments clearly shocked the crowd at the summit, some of whom reacted with boos and shouts of condemnation.
McCain was shot down flying combat missions in Vietnam on October 26, 1967. He was taken captivity with a broken right leg and fractures in both arms. He was beaten and tortured repeatedly, in part because his father commanded the U.S. Navy in the Pacific....

Trump has no business/right to categorize any US vet that has served honorably because he did not do so for love of Country. His choice of making money has it’s own pitfalls. I will give him leeway for a deserter like the guy from Idaho only because that guy sold out the US and his buddies in arms to release US enemies. Trumps bravado will wear thin by such criticisms.
On his twenty-third bombing mission in October 1967, he was shot down over Hanoi and badly injured. He subsequently endured five and a half years as a prisoner of war, including periods of torture. In 1968, he refused a North Vietnamese offer of early release, because it would have meant leaving before other prisoners who had been held longer. He was released in 1973 after the Paris Peace Accords.
That is a Hero. Great Politician that I agree with maybe not. Hero yes.
And for your information, throughout military history many great warriors were captured and honored by their enemies for having fought so bravely.

McCain was an eff up from High school. He barely got out of Annapolis and crashed 3-4 jets before his misadventure in Viet Nam. He has been a disgrace from the moment he entered the Senate. McCain was one of the Keating Five and he’s lucky all he got was a censure because they couldn’t pin anything on him except poor judgement. He’s a loser who happened to get shot down in viet Nam and sadly got tortured by the enemy.
War hero? No way.
Having watched the video, you still believe the lefty/rino narrative about what happened? This is manufactured. Trump was baited and he’ll learn his lesson, but he hardly did what Laraza Rick, Jeb!, Huckabee, and Mitt are portraying. Oh I forgot the RNC too. A real list of winners there.
Trump’s ability to rise above the conservative-hating media has caused his big success with conservatives, even though he certainly isn’t one.
So he has indeed ‘stepped on it’ here since apparently the media is successfully using this to raise up their ‘hero’ McCain, the guy who calls conservatives “crazies”.
Oh well maybe Trump- whom I’m no fan of- will win the next battle with the media.

If you seriously cared about such things, I'd advise you to be vastly more worried about Jeb Bush changing party affiliation to Democrat, going third party, or otherwise intentionally throwing the election.
He is not nearly as popular here, as he supposedly is elsewhere in the nation.
I have never as a WWII overseas veteran whose brother was killed fighting on Okinawa believed that McCain in any way was more of a hero than any soldier/marine/sailors who fought the battles, especially in hand to hand fighting.
What we are seeing is what a small percentage of Americans have served in the Military of their Country. So....they don’t know about McCain.
I’d say, that Trump should apologize and be the bigger man. Because if the can talk this bullcrap about a military man of outstanding sacrifice, if that is the way he can talk about veterans, if he can disrespect us...and just walk away ....then he is treating us the way the is treating his enemies. Apologize to your side ....don’t Apologize to your enemy. ....that’s the rule Donald. Learn it.....because this vote, not even 10 billion will buy. .....
