Dear Republican Candidates: Please Stop Attacking The Donald
The PJ Tatler ^ | July 17, 2015 | Michael van der Galien, Editor-in-Chief of Dutch news and opinion website De Dagelijkse Standaard

Rick Perry made a tragic mistake by coming out swinging at the billionaire businessman.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

One of the moderators in one of my favorite conservative communities on Google+ (yes, it still exists) recently published a post in which she praised Rick Perry’s response to Donald Trump’s statements on immigration and border security, while criticizing Ted Cruz for his. She’s not the only one who believes that Republicans have to distance themselves from the successful businessman, fearing they’ll alienate Hispanic voters if they don’t.

Moderator Leslie P. quotes from this article by Jon Gabriel:

Perry is setting himself up as the grown-up in the race. Along with his race speech a couple weeks back, it’s Perry, not Trump, who is the truth-teller of 2016.

Although it might seem wise to distance oneself from Trump because of the Hispanic vote, I believe Republican candidates are making a tragic mistake when they actually do so. I like to compare The Donald to Geert Wilders, who probably is the best known Dutch politician in the rest of the world, and especially in the United States.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

Despite his fame, Wilders’ party is relatively small and has little to no influence. This while the biggest rightist party of the Netherlands (the VVD) is in power (and actually occupies the prime minister’s office). The reason Wilders is less influential than many thought he would be is simple: when election time arrived, the VVD was disturbed by Wilders’ anti-immigrant and anti-Islam comments, but the party also realized that many conservative and classically liberal voters shared his concerns. So what they did was simple: instead of ignoring Wilders or telling him to bugger off, they said that — unlike most other politicians — he had the courage to talk about certain polarizing issues that needed to be addressed. Yes, their take on them was different, but they shared his concerns and his view that immigration (from Muslim countries) had to be limited.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

While Wilders was polling exceptionally well when attacked by all other parties, the VVD included, his poll numbers dropped when the VVD actually took him and his potential supporters seriously. The result? The VVD won two elections in a row.

A lot of voters who sympathize with a guy like Wilders or Trump come to their senses eventually, but only if they know that other candidates (or parties) care about them and their concerns. Alienate them too much and you may very well lose them forever — at which point a few extra Hispanic voters don’t matter.

Ted Cruz seems to be the only Republican candidate to understand this, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons that he’s in second place fundraising wise, right behind master fundraiser Jeb Bush.

US News just ran this, not saying I agree with it. It is a bit like the “counter” articles that get posted here. Kind of depressing but forward on, we can’t worry about this.

First and foremost the Latinos and Blacks are not going to vote republican. They are overwhelmingly freebiecrats.

Republicans need to focus on getting out the yuge republican base and the indies. That’s how you win the presidency. Forget about Blacks and Hispanics.

The GOP blindly chases 30% of 12% of the electorate while telling the 65-70% of the citizens that they must surrender their country to fraudulently documented foreigners and wonder why they lose.....

Uhh, they are usually attacking him first. I don’t think President Reagan meant you can’t defend yourself.

These guys need to learn how to handle liberal inciteful reporting. They aretrying to incite from their reporting, attacks on each other, so the media can then just run with it.

Liberal media is the kid who causes the playground fight between two kids by telling each of them the other thinks they suck and wants to know if they’ll accept the others’ challenge to fight.

Republicans may not gain many Hispanic votes in places like California but I don’t know California but I do know there are otherwise, plenty of conservative Hispanic voters around. You get a name like Cruz on the ticket, who knows?

I think that Hispanics may not like Republicans is exaggerated, at least some and is almost used to scare people.

Just have a platform and candidates who run on values.

They show their true establishment colors when they attack someone who has their finger on the REAL HOT BUTTON ISSUES . Cruz is not guilty of this but many are . Perhaps there is a kinder gentler way of saying what Trump says he stands for on these HOT BUTTON ISSUES but few are willing to even mention them . What they need to do is stop attacking the messenger and grow a set balls ( not you Carlie ) and stand up for the American Christian Conservative and fiscal responsibility which are all under attack from this administration and the radical left which includes all the DNC candidates .

How true. Large Hispanic populations in Illinois, California, and New York do not matter since they go blue no matter what. large Hispanic populations in Texas and Arizona don’t matter for the opposite reason. So what % of the vote and in what states are they really going after these hispanics?

Romney could have won 100 percent of the “Hispanic” votes and he still would have lost.

I’m all in favor of them attacking Trump, because to do so exposes their own weaknesses.

Trump is throwing out popular ideas. If they come out in opposition, criticizing his ideas, they show their own ideas and they can be held accountable for them.

No Republican should ever publicly attack a fellow Republican, for the same reason that no member of a baseball team, for example, should ever publicly attack a fellow team member.

In both cases, the organizations they work for are damaged.

As in all types of attacks, the victim has the right to defend himself, so Donald Trump can fire back when so inclined.

In choosing a president, character is important. So anyone like Rick Perry and Rand Paul, whose entire candidacies have so far been spent attacking their fellow candidates and thereby weakening the Republican party, should not be supported.

I agree. One thing I am struck by is that since there are so many Republican candidates, about 16, Graham, Kasich, Fiorina, including these types who are lesser known, the inside info must be that the GOP has a very good chance to take back the White House. Hope so.

And to the Donald: Please stop attacking the other Republican candidates with ad hominem attacks. Calling people stupid ads is not only uncivil, it detracts from your message. Oh, by the way, Mr. Trump, what exactly is your message other than you dislike illegal aliens and Chinese imports? I don't like them either, but what exactly is your solution to those problems?
