Letter: Defend U.S. manufacturing (U.S. Business & Industry Council praises Cruz)
The Dallas Morning News' Letters to the Editor ^ | July 8, 2015 | Kevin L. Kearns, president, U.S. Business & Industry Council

Posted on 07/08/2015 3:24:26 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

America needs a strong manufacturing sector to sustain robust economic growth that creates new businesses, jobs and opportunities for all. Manufacturing is responsible for 70 percent of U.S. R&D, and often spins off entire new industries. But since 2000, American manufacturing has lost thousands of factories and 5 million jobs. The top reason: poorly conceived “free trade” agreements that Washington has pushed, including NAFTA, CAFTA and Korea and China joining the World Trade Organization.

Given the record of job outsourcing and factory closings, it is troubling that Congress has just given President Barack Obama fast track power to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, which will only lead to more job loss and higher trade deficits....

The best way to bring business back is not to punish them for leaving but to create the fertile ground for them to grow here. Eliminate taxes and regulations where ever possible and support American energy production to help bring operating costs down.

You can’t exactly say “Sen. Ted Cruz stood firmly against fast track.” In fact he was a proponent. While I’m glad he came around on this I suspect his vote had more to do with backroom dealing and strong opposition than the substance of the trade agreements.

Interesting indeed.

China took a big hit in their markets.

If China’s economy crashes the US won’t be able to borrow money so the national debt will become a top priority issue soon in this presidential race.

It’s strange how the issue of the $ 18 Trillion debt has been put on the back burner, but this issue to deal with the national debt with China’s weak economy will be the bull in a china shop issue very shortly.

Business will put their money where their mouth is and pocket book and support the candidate that starts tackeling the issue of taxes, regulations, poor economic growth to get our economy growing again and bring manufacturing back to American shores.

Soon people won’t care about issues like having the first woman as president, or if women can get free abortion on demand, or free contriceptions.

So the PRESIDENT of a large industry association doesn’t know what he’s talking about but you do? Guess what? I’m going with the expert on this one...

We’ll just mint some trillion dollar platinum coins, as was proposed several years ago. No sweat.

Obviously I don't have as much of a financial interest as the president of a large industry association. However, I do very clearly recall that Ted Cruz was strongly supportive of fast track and had numerous articles on his campaign website to explain his support (several were posted here). It wasn't until the very end that he changed his vote because of “corrupt Washington backroom deal-making”. In case you have forgotten he also voted for fast track the first time it went through the senate. Don't know about you but I would not call this “firmly against fast track” as the letter states.

There are many different sections and subsections of those trade deals. Go back and re-read posts, especially those that are actually from Senator Cruz or his people.

I followed this issue closely and have commented on a number of the threads here related to it. I realize that Ted Cruz voted against FTA the 2nd time. But to suggest that he is “firmly against fast track” is an outright lie. I know this because I spent the better part of a week lambasting him for supporting it! As much as you would like to deny this you cannot honestly do so.

I don’t have the time or inclination to go round-and-round with you, but several people here have put together charts, links and graphs on the subject.

That isn’t what I said, but if that makes you feel good, run with it.

What have I said that is incorrect and what is your evidence for refuting it? I have yet to see "charts, links and graphs".

Personally I like Cruz but I don't believe deception is a convincing political argument, nor do I believe that Cruz is opposed to the trade agreements which depend on FTA for passage. This letter is nothing more than an attempt to rewrite history.
