Can Ted Cruz break into the top tier?
WPTZ-TV ^ | July 6, 2015 | Theodore Schleifer, CNN

He's got $50 million behind him, a fervent following in Iowa, and a brand that he's worked hard to never muddy, but Ted Cruz has yet to have a breakout moment. Is that about to change?

The Texas senator may remain mired in the middle of the seemingly endless Republican pack, but his allies say he is poised to make his move. Doing just well enough nationally to make the debate stage and showing enough promise in early-primary to have a shot next winter, Cruz and his allies are unperturbed by surveys that show him sitting stagnant.

He is bracketed by social conservatives like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, and by Tea Party favorites like Rand Paul and Ben Carson. In order to stand out, Cruz has been willing to step out from the rest of the field.

"He should be capturing the archconservative vote in a way that he's not," said Noah Rothman, a conservative writer for Commentary Magazine, who sees Cruz tacking right for political purposes. "This whole summer could be setting up a Cruz resurrection in the polls."

He has become the most vocal defender of Donald Trump, the flamboyant businessman and presidential candidate who other Republicans have denounced....

He IS the top tier, as far as I am concerned.
Trump is gaining my respect by not backing down.

Never voting for any amnesty candidate so that leaves out most everyone else.

He might have broken out last month had he not voted for Obama’s trade bill though he did reverse himself “I voted for it before I voted against it.” Still, he is my No. 1 choice. And I have no No. 2 choice yet.

Inexplicably, Bush3 is in the lead:

It is amazing how sheep always seem to follow the media suggestions.

I can make a poll show anything you want it to show.

Yup, the trade bill thing worried the hell out of me too.

I thought “It seems a stupid thing to support..but I’m sure Cruz is smarter than me so maybe he’s right?”

And then he switched positions and I was relieved my instincts were correct but worried that he made a false start on the matter...

Anyways...he needs to form a strong alliance with Trump. They need to totally refrain from attacking each other in the debates and tag team the rinos off the frickin stage.

He's always been on the right. No tacking.

I would give him a pass on the Trade authority.

There is a ton of confusion about what was being voted on, and whether or not the vote was in favor of the TPP or not (it was not.)

Even here on FR there was a ton of confusion about what the vote was.

Most people are not even aware there is an election next year.

Few will watch, fewer yet will pay attention, nearly all will forget who said what in a day or two.

I dearly hope this was Trump’s plan. Exposé the GOPe and leave our man Cruz standing at the head of the pack. I posted a month ago, “ Trump can introduce Cruz as ‘the man I hired to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

They could just damn well pull it off. God Bless them.

Cruz always wanted fast track for his Presidency. But, he was never going to vote for any trade deal from this administration.

As things turned out, he got fast track. Luckily for him, politically, his vote wasn’t necessary — so he voted against it.

That might be true, bigbob, but the debates are still important. Coming out of the debates the media will push the most liberal agenda possible without shame. The only way to blunt that is to have a great performance that withstands their spin. I believe Ted can do that and stay true to principles.

Ditto. Cruz is still my #1 choice by a huge margin. Bush might as well not even run. Not too thrilled with Perry either for throwing Trump under the bus. Trump is right.

Cruz is a wise guy, ha, ha! Very wise! A consummate chess player. He knows when and how to make his moves and CNN could never reach high enough to carry his chess board for him let alone tell him how to move his king. But they are correct to worry. He is almost the total antithesis of what they stand for.

It took Reagan three national elections before becoming President. Cruz probably is not out to win this time, but to become a known entity so that he can win at some point in the future.
