In a comment about a report of what confusingly appears to be support for attacks on Hillary Clinton coming from Democrat Party mainstays like WaPo and NYT, I posted the following:
Most don’t seem to have a clue about what is really going on here.
The beliefs at the heart of the GOP are free market, individual liberty conservatism. Those at the heart of the Democrats are statist, collectivist Marxism.
Both philosophies are currently making strong plays to permanently take over their respective parties and their political and financial apparats. Both are backed and, to some extent, controlled by massively rich entities.
Politicians like Jeb Bush and Billary Clinton have much more in common with each other than they do with the emerging powers in their own parties. And each is regarded as an enemy by those emerging powers.
These attacks on Billary are coming from the emerging Marxist majority among Democrats, just as equally debilitating assaults on Jeb will be launched by the emerging conservative majority in the GOP.
Just as with angry and frustrated conservatives, similar leftists would rather nominate and lose with somebody they actually support and wish to vote for, somebody who holds their own principles, than win with another crash test dummy who hates them, just because they happen to share a meaningless party label.
It’s going to be an interesting election.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a Cruz versus Warren election. That’s what the bases of both parties would really like to see.
I’ve given it a bit more thought, and a certain framework is becoming visible to me. Over the past fifty years or so, as the dominant Boomers first rose, then more or less took over the culture, they managed to morph both parties into an agreement about the basic desirability of big government solutions to a host of problems and issue.
This resulted in two parties whose leaderships essentially represented an identical demographic, and as a result, those party members who didn’t reflect this agreement in principle were gradually frozen out. But that doesn’t mean that the issues over which those members selected either the GOP or the Dems went away. It’s just that the “bipartisan center” marginalized them.
This center then attempted to cement their power and control my mandating that the highest political value should not be the basic disagreements which animated their parties for a century, but instead should be party cooperation to work together and accomplish the goals they deemed proper. In effect, bipartisanship is a celebration of a monolithic state “getting things done.” It doesn’t matter what those things might be, just that the state is monolithic and those who oppose it are pushed to the sidelines.
This worked while the Boomers were the massive cultural, political, and economic force they became. But the Boomers are fading now, and the old walls are fading with them. And those sorts of people who originally set up two political parties because they held very different views on major issues are coming to the fore again.
Jeb Bush and Billary represent the stumbling last gasp of the Boomer “bipartisan state” model. Barack Obama represented the first push of the new generations of cultural and political warriors now emerging.
Billary has far more in common with the Bushes than they do with Barack Obama. But Obama is a much more pure representation of the animating leftist, statist, Marxist principles that animated the Democrats than they are.
Just as leaders like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are much more representative of the small government, strong defense, individual liberty, capitalist free marked beliefs that animated the GOP.
There are, of course, many other forces at work as well. Generational cycles, economic cycles both medium and long term, and the ever-growing pressure of new, destabilizing technologies. Change is afoot, and in the political arena, old warriors are separating themselves into cohesive but opposing forces, the better to wage war over the issues that have always concerned them. Right versus left is about to actually mean something again.
In short, both the GOP and the Dems are remaking themselves in much older images. Between them, they will grind the Bushes and the Billarys to dust.
The GOP has irrefutably disproven this since the 2014 midterms. There honestly doesn't seem to be an inch of daylight between the two parties. A day doesn't go by the GOP doesn't give up another 2014 campaign promise without a fight. Author Quick is a Qook.
