Well said, and I think it’s exactly how she would have put it herself.
It’s a shame so many FReepers feel they must live in an echo chamber where only conservative thoughts are expressed, what a rich opportunity they miss to gain insight to reinforce and fine-tune their own beliefs by ignoring people like Paglia who hold different views, but are intellectually honest and don’t simply spew ideological verbage.
Well put!
While I agree with you, I'll say that echo chambers have their place and benefits, too. It's like everybody at dinner getting the same dessert -- there's no opportunity to share in something different from what one is eating. But at the same time, one won't be subjected to someone else eating something disgusting. And having spent a little time (very little, thank God!) reading comments on a few liberal political sites, I'm just as happy that they aren't welcomed here.
Paglia is a rare gem, a shining example of how somebody with a different point of view can be smart and witty and incisive, can disagree without being disagreeable, and everybody gets to learn something and come away enriched. It's just a shame that such erudition is so rare.
