U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll Saturday, his third victory in as many years.
This year he carried 26 percent of the vote. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz placed third, with 11.5 percent, while former Gov. Rick Perry came in eleventh, with 1.1 percent.
Both Paul and Cruz openly campaigned at the event. Cruz volunteers distributed custom-made buttons that said "Cruz Crew." Perry had a smaller get-out-the-vote operation at the conference.
The contest comes after three days of speeches from presidential contenders and noteworthy conservative activists. On Thursday, Cruz touted his battles within the GOP, while Perry attacked President Obama on foreign policy.
You mean the Rand Paul who couldn’t bow down to Obama fast enough when Rudy Giuliani questioned Obamas love for the USA?
ok, cpac is known for being wrong, and it has always been packed with little millennial paul-bots whining for legal pot . . . but still . . . if cruz can’t do better than third at cpac, I wonder where he could win.
I was surprised that he didn’t do better,
Paul supporters are like Dead Heads. They swarm gigs.
Scott Walker.
Scott Walker was second. Full results here: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/feb/28/cpac-2015-see-the-full-straw-poll-results/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Walker, of course came in second but I don’t really think that ANY of the top 4-5 care about this poll. The publicity and chance to spout their opinions was quite valuable, but the results of the poll....meaningless.
I think Walker has sucked the air out of the Cruz campaign for now. Most primary voters lean towards a governor first. Walker is hitting all the right notes so far.
There’s probably a reason the guy has been a big success campaigning in a pretty blue state. He’s good at this stuff. I like both but happy to see Walker rising.
Walker/Cruz 2016
The convictions and résumé of those two should get the base whipped up enough to fill the gap lost due to sluggish enthusiasm.
Or Walker/Paul if Cruz declines the second slot.
People like the Rand/Ron Paul they’ve invented in their head.
2 terms each to get the nation on track again.
As always, it’s amazing what you can do with sufficient quantities of weed and fast food.
Cruz is for letting the states legalize pot if they choose.
Huckaphony 0.3%, Grahamnesty 0.1%. There is Divine justice.
Interesting fact: This is the third straight time Rand Paul wins this poll.
Scott Walker was a very close second. What is that? Chopped livah?
Neither Cruz or Paul is likely to be interested in 2nd place. They will either go big or go home. The status and power of a US senator is way more than the VP. They are both young enough to sit it out for 4-8 years if they need to.
My guess is Rand Paul will have to pick between his senate seat and the Presidency as he cannot run for both so my money is that he won’t run.
Ted IMO has nothing to lose if he can get enough money to run. He is not up for re-election this year. I hope he takes a run at it. I also hope Trump takes a run at it as he will keep the rest of them honest in the debates.
