Yesterday Governor Palin penned a post on her Facebook page expressing her support of Senator McCain in the face of censure by his own party in Arizona. In many ways, it echoed the op-ed she wrote for the Arizona Central when she endorsed Senator McCains re-election nearly four years ago. Governor Palins support of Senator McCain shows far more of her character than of his merit. As Governor Palin wrote last night:
We live in a time of diminishing virtues because of societal influence towards total self-centeredness. This is unfortunate and makes raising families, conducting business, and governing that much more challenging. I know how important the virtue of loyalty is because in politics its pretty much nonexistent. I stand on that most important virtue and answer those asking today: Yes, I am proud to have been asked to run with him in 2008, and he is my friend.
If loyalty is essentially nonexistent in politics as Governor Palin notes, how would anyone know what it looks like? One needs to look no further than Governor Palins own character and action over the years. Governor Palin has stood by Senator McCains side since 2008, in spite of his often tepid support for her and his nonexistent defense of her when she was more or less accused of murdering his Arizona constituents in Tucson three years ago. Governor Palins loyalty has been noted by many. For example, Governor Nikki Haley noted in her book about Governor Palins continued support in the midst of allegations during Haleys gubernatorial campaign that she had an affair:
When allegations from Folks first surfaced, Haley remembers having Palin in her corner after just one phone call a contrast to the way another supporter, Romney, had handled the news.
Sarah goes with her gut, and I love her for that, she writes. Mitts team [said] they were going to have a Nikki Haley meeting the next morning to decide what to do next.
Governor Palin again stood with Haley in May of 2012 when a South Carolina union leader beat a pinata with a picture of Governor Haleys face on it. This came even after Haleys silence when Governor Palin and the Tea Party was blamed for the Tucson shooting. Suffice it to say, Governor Palins loyalty is because of who she is (her character), not because of who the others are.
Support differs from complete agreement, however. Governor Palin has expressed disagreement with McCain either implicitly or explicitly multiple times. As she noted in her Facebook post, Governor Palin parts ways with Senator McCain on ANWR and immigration. She has parted ways with him implicitly too. Her Let Allah sort it out approach to Syria is 180 degrees different than Senator McCains neocon approach to Syria. In her vintage speech to a Tea Party rally in Iowa in September 2011, Governor Palin mocked Senator McCain, although not in name, for his reference to Tea Partiers as hobbits.
To be sure, Governor Palin has her share of disagreements with Senator McCain, just as some supporters may disagree with her for supporting Senator McCain in this manner. That is the beauty of independence of thoughtdifference of opinion does negate support. As Governor Palins brother Chuck Heath Jr. noted on his Facebook page today:
If I turned my back on every friend and family member who didnt agree with me 100% of the time, Id have no friends or family members.
It cant be said much better than that. We dont have to always agree, but we all can learn a lesson in loyalty from the one political figure who personifies it.
Battered wife syndrome.
Loyalty is stupid when it brings you down.
Well said.
Agree. I wrote same elsewhere yesterday when this “issue” first arose.
Oldplayer
How so?
Palin doesn't do things out of political expediency; she does it because it's the right thing to do and that's the type of person she is. There's nothing "battered" about it, because it doesn't reflect on her character.
Look, she propelled Ted Cruz to the Senate, for crying out loud. You can't get more conservative and independent than that.
Loyalty is even stupider when you don’t really even have to comment at all. And when you DO get put on the spot, the ol’ “I don’t know enough about his sound bite to give you mine”, comes in handy. It’s time for her to break that out.
In the McLame/Hayworth primary, she could easily have simply said, “Well, I’m gonna just let this play out, rather than run the risk of weakening the winning candidate in the General Election.”’
Thing is, by now, she doesn’t owe that bastard any more than he seems to think he owes the conservative cause. It’s time she learns which people merit her support, and which ones don’t.
I love my precious Sarah, and always will; but these are caveats I would express to her, or anyone else.
Lie down with dogs, Get up with fleas.
Nonsense. Palin lowered her own stature with this absurd, pathetic paeon to an American traitor. She should have instead called on him to resign.
Well said. Palin should realize that you can’t defend the indefensible. McCain’s words and actions are indefensible. Palin loses credibility every time she speaks up for McCain.
Take the blinders off of your eyes. She has been disrespected over and over my McStain and his minions and yet she still stands by his side, just like a woman with a drunken abusive husband.
Drop the hero worship. She's not going to save us. Tina Fey permanently torpedoed Sarah with her portrayal on SNL. All the low information voters will remember is "I can see Russia from my back yard, I know about foreign policy". It's too bad what's been done to her. I like her.
Palin repeatedly supports non-conservative candidates...and Amnesty Liberal ones
Not only she supports McCain, she also supported Jeff Flake, Another Amnesty Liberal who was working w Illinois Dem Luis Gutierrez in the House to pass an Amnesty bill.
Also...she helped sabotage Todd Akin’s Senate campaign by threatening to run her GOP Party Insider candidate Sarah Steelman....the GOPe choice who finished third on the primary
Is Sarah Palin going to support Lindsey Graham in his primary, too? How will the Palinistas spin that?
We need leadership who will BE conservative...not TALK conservative
I wonder if her true purpose is to keep the Tea Party firmly in the grip of the GOP and unable to form a viable third party. Say all the right things, but keep blocking the door. It would explain a lot.
It does make a lot of sense.
My idiot brother-in-law, who often reminds us of his brilliance, honestly believes that Sarah said she could see Russia from her porch.
No, actually, I believe, as much as I dislike her support of him, that she is showing the public that she is a loyal friend and will not stab people in the back. She is showing true Christian spirit, especially in the face of his antics against her. She is the person of grace and giving a person their due on the issues that they are due it. She doesn’t just throw out the baby with the bathwater. She has also criticized his really egregious stunts, as well. Do I wish she’d hang him out to dry like he really deserves? Yes, but in my heart of hearts, I cannot say that there are not times I wish him harm...not literally, but something that takes him out of the arena of power. But I’d ten times rather have him than 99% of the democrats now serving in Congress. He is pro=life, and holds to SOME of the party platform. I really can’t stand him, personally. Maybe Sarah is using tact to make him appreciate the fact that she has not totally condemned him, which would likely cause him to say some rather nasty things should she make a run for the 2016 ticket. I wish she’d said nothing, but there are times, once you have been in that arena, that curtesy gives some support. You notice that she clarified those remarks.
