Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that the tea party is a positive influence on the Republican Party.
I think they raised issues that an awful lot of Americans care about, Cheney said on NBCs Today show. Its an uprising, in part, and the good thing is its taken place within the Republican Party. I dont see it as a negative. I think its much better to have that kind of turmoil and change in the Republican Party than it would be to have it outside.
Cheney, who has a new book coming out about struggles with his heart health, said that while he doesnt consider himself a member of the tea party, its frustration with Washington is healthy.
Im not a card-carrying member I dont think there is a card but I have respect for what the people are doing, Cheney said. These are Americans. Theyre loyal, theyre patriotic, theyre taxpayers and theyre fed up with what they see happening in Washington. I think its a normal healthy reaction, and the fact that the party is having to adjust to it is positive.
Cheney also said its time for the party to make way for new leadership, including his daughter, when asked about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
He represents the thinking of an awful lot of people, obviously in Texas, Cheney said......

Is this a little make-nice to ease the road for Liz?
***
Totally. I, for one, am not buying it.
Somewhat surprised but pleased to read this.

I am not taken in by this.
He would not say this if his daughter was running for Senate.
His wife is even more liberal....once headed the Natl Endowment of the Humamities
Not all republicans are republicans.. some are democrats...
That want democracy not a REPUBLIC..
cannot have both.. both is IMPOSSIBLE..
It’s either central giverment -OR- a Republic..
Heh. Sensible.
Liz Cheney needs to call out Ayotte, Collins and Murkowski for trying to become celebrities and using Jimmy Carter logic.
Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.
Maybe Dick is smart enough to realize how close the TP is to going third party. He makes the point that he is glad the TP is operating within the GOP. He should be, but it’s not working so well for the TP.
Ah yes, Dick Cheney, who once informed us (in his own words) that “deficits don’t matter,” is now a born-again conservative. Seems to me that this is nothing more than another cheap con to help his daughter Liz in her run for the Wyoming Senate.
Why did his opinion do an about-face once his daughter decided to run for Senate and needed Tea Party support in Wyoming? If Cheney was a fiscal conservative from the get-go, he kept awfully quiet about it during the Bush years.
The bottom line is that the guy is a crony hack and an opportunist, nothing more. However, judging from your handle, you're still too infatuated with the Bush administration to see either Cheney or GWB for the crypto-liberals that they were/are.
Say what you want about Cheney, only a fool believes he is not one of the smartest guys in the room.
Bill Clinton is a very smart man too, that doesn't mean that I wanted him to be President. Nor did I want Cheney for VP.
