NEWARK It was a kumbaya moment for Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Gov. Chris Christie, but one that will have a lasting impression in Newark.
Despite being on opposing sides during Bookers victorious U.S. Senate run against Republican Steve Lonegan, the two men once again touted their bipartisan alliance Thursday with the groundbreaking of the Springfield Avenue Marketplace, a $94 million retail and housing complex that includes a 66,000 square-foot ShopRite supermarket along one of Newarks most troubled corridors.
This is not because of a mayor. It really is because of great leadership on many different fronts, Booker said, thanking Christie, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, the City Council and project developer Tucker Development, the company that also built the downtown Courtyard Marriott.
Booker heaped thanks on the developer, Richard Tucker, but also credited his partnership with Christie for helping to usher in much of Newarks economic development boom.
It happened because I have a governor who put partisanship aside, stood by this city and delivered for us. Were seeing it today, Booker said...

Umm, supermarkets open every single day in America. I get it, Newark is a third world hell hole and a new lemonade stand is a big deal. But, seriously, is this a big deal that should be celebrated? Am I the only one that sees the irony?

Gov. Chris Christie maintains a big lead over his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono.
With wide leads among men and women, Christie sails ahead of Buono 6233 percent among likely voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.
Christie leads 926 percent among Republicans and 7123 percent among independent voters, while Democrats back Buono 6630 percent, according to the Quinnipiac poll.
The Quinnipiac University poll of 1,938 New Jersey likely voters was conducted from Oct, 10-14, and has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
