It didnt take long for the video of a screeching Mitt Romney protester (and 47-percenter poster star) in Ohio to go viral and for #ObamaPhone to trend on Twitter. The Obama campaign noticed it too, and youd think theyd be quick to thank such a passionate supporter for her boots-on-the-ground help, but instead the campaigns Truth Team has wasted no time disconnecting.

It's interesting that Team Obama felt the need to "correct" the #ObamaPhone stuff. A confident campaign would have brushed it off.

But why? The woman said shes voting Obama because the president gave her a free phone. Whos to say he didnt?
Obamas Truth Team quickly tweeted out a link to FactCheck.org, which concludes that Obama Phone is a complete misnomer. FactCheck even manages to blame Bush for the program, noting that the SafeLink program, which provides free cell phones to qualifying applicants who receive food stamps, Medicaid or other federal benefits, started under President George Bush.
So, that free cell phone? Obama didnt buy that. Mr. President, why dont you want the poor to have cell phones?

@CuffyMeh I love that the Obama "Truth Team" has to explain his supporters are morons for thinking he gave them free phones.

How long before the video is called racist?
How ‘bout we give her some free texting to go with her free Obamaphone!
How ‘bout we give her some free texting to go with her free Obamaphone!
Would like to know how that tax gets divided up. Wonder if he gets a cut of it?
If you read the above requirements, actually your Vietnam Vet friend would NOT qualify for the “free” Obama phone. That’s what’s so skewed about this “free” stuff the government offers. It all seems to be geared to those with children or those who are already getting some kind of assistance or the mentally impaired and/or addicted.
I have a friend who receives $850/mo social security and she still doesn’t qualify for food stamps, they told her she receives just $20 a month too much to qualify.
It’s all a huge scam.
“financially disadvantaged”
BS!!!
I’ll believe the “truth team” when they go to court to sue Obamaphone.com for fraud....
*crickets*
Republican Congressman Tim Griffin (Arkansas) said he wants to end government issued cell phones to low-income and elderly individuals in an effort to stop rampant abuse of the program.
“Some people are getting two, three, four,10, 20, 30, 40 cell phones.” said Congressman Griffin.
He says a few years back the government extended the program to provide not just land lines, but cell phone service.
The congressman said the program is being abused and people are even selling the phones. “I have a four year old that goes to a school here in Little Rock. She came home with an advertisement for a free cell phone in her backpack.” said Congressman Griffin.
He says it is the Federal Universal Service Charge on your bill and goes into a fund regulated by the FCC.
“It started costing in the millions and now we’re close to a billion dollars a year.” said Congressman Griffin.
Uncle Sam’s Unlimited Plan: How the Government’s Cell Phone Giveaway Is Costing You Billions
http://griffin.house.gov/Lifeline
In 2008, the Lifeline Program was expanded to include wireless service providers. Between 2008 and 2009, non-landline costs for the program doubled from $143 million to $384 million and then doubled again, totaling over $719 million in 2010. Before the certification of the first wireless carrier, the overall Lifeline Program cost $822 million per year, an amount consistent with the previous five years. That number grew to $1.025 billion in 2009 and to $1.315 billion in 2010. According to the Federal Communications Commission, it is common for multiple wireless service providers to seek reimbursement for Lifeline services provided to the same household.
And theyre not just phones that are able to dial 911. Theyre smartphones. Theyre the type of phones that you and I pay hundreds of dollars a month to have contracts for.
Griffin said his constituents have told him about people abusing the government benefit.
I had someone call me this morning telling me they had somebody who would only work a certain number of hours a week because if they worked too many hours a week then they couldnt get their government assistance. And that person has multiple cell phones, and gets them new every month with new minutes, he said, sounding outraged.
The cell phone companies add to the problem, he said.
Every one they give out, they get money for from the federal government. So they have an incentive to give as many away as possible, Griffin explained. And thats exactly what theyre doing, and theyre making a killing.
A 2011 audit found that 269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers. Several websites have been created to promote free government cell phones, including theThe Obama Cell Phone website at Obamaphone.net.
