Report: Fewer than one in three California voters registered as Republican

Since just before the last California presidential primary, the proportion of voters registered as Republicans has fallen from 33.5 percent to 30.4 percent, according to new figures from the California Secretary of State.

That’s about the same time that I became a “Decline to State” voter.

For comparison, here are the numbers from 1982:

D: 53.2%
R: 34.9%
Decline to State: 9.4%

The Democrats have lost a lot more over the years than Republicans.

Nonsense - I’m assuming you don’t live here based on your comments. I’m sure there are areas that resemble what you have described, but not the entire state.

There aren’t many registered Republicans in Pyongyang and Havana either. Republicans just aren’t drawn towards Marxist nanny states. Republicans prefer that the government stay out of their lives and just leave them alone.

Sorry to hear you have to come back. but I must admit I will be glad to have some conservative company again. I am a native Californian and proud of my state; just not the people in it.
Born in San Francisco as a matter of fact, but that was a long time before it became San Fagcisco. After I got out of the Corps I tried Colorado but there was no work there in 72, so I had to come back to where the jobs were. They have all left the state since but back then it was pretty good. ended up retiring here. If you can stay out of the major population centers you will find it's not so bad.
I retired to my own little farm in Trinity county and I find a lot of like minded people here, hard working and a good foundation in family and God. One of the best parts of it is about 95% of them have firearms, so they wont have to borrow any of the ones I lost in that terrible boating accident on Trinity Lake.

I live in Southern California (eastern LA county by Orange county). Republicans could win here if we had a strong, organized CONSERVATIVE Republican party here. The state GOP is a mess and when RINO’s run for office the Conservative vote is repressed.

Northern California is overwhelmingly Democrat and they alwqys have high voter turnout up there (always better than 60%). The more populated counties in Southern California lean Republican (eastern part of LA county, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Kern, Ventura) as well as the inland valleys. But voter turnout here is always in the lower 40% because Conservatives are uninspired by our choices for office.

Meg Whitman could have won the governorship, but once it was revealed she knowingly employed an illegal immigrant, Conservatives were put off and stayed home. The heavy Dem turn out up north off set the vote down here as it always does. All the well know Democrat moonbats (save Maxine Waters) are from the bay area (Fienstien, Boxer, Moonbeam).

We have some outstanding Conservatives representing this state in the House (Darrel Isaa, Tom McClintock, Ed Royce, Duncan Hunter). Conservatives can win here if the state GOP could get it’s act together. There was a higher percentage of registered Democrats in this state when Reagan, Deukmejian and Pete Wilson were elected governor. Dems are slipping her as well. I can guarantee you if a solid Conservative would run for office here, he would win. People here are fed up.

I still remember years ago when this idiot liberal actually asked me if I was Republican (after ranting about Bush for 5 minutes) and I answered calmly “No, I am not a Republican..’

Afterwards..I followed: “but I would rather kill myself 10 times over if I was a stupid, brainless Democrat”.

On the rare occasions when someone asks me if I am a Republican, I always say "No, they're too liberal for me." Which is true. That'll get a lib's head spinning.

I suspect that there are quite a few people like me here in CA - vote conservatively but never bothered registering as a Republican. After all, by the time CA has its primary, the situation is pretty much decided anyway. The Republican Party in CA is a joke. The fact that Arnold ran as a Republican here tells you all you need to know. But I will never, never vote for a Democrat.

We’re in the same boat. But you are correct, voting GOP is like voting Dem. However, the GOP in CA closes ranks and votes as a dependable united bloc unlike the national GOP which huffs/puffs but caves eventually. Being a minority makes you tougher actually but working in Hollywood, you will be surprised at how many closet conservatives there are. I mean, it’s not a coincidence that Iron Man’s script got green lit ;)

I live in CA and I was a registered Republican for over 30 years. I registered as an Indy in 2007 and I don’t regret it.

I'm thinking of doing the same here in NC.

During a Primary I could pick either party and their candidates .

Had I been an Indy(aka Unaffiliated here) last Tues. I would have likely crossed over and voted for the weakest Dems.

I would also suspect there are quite a few people who are really Republican/conservative who register as Dems in order to have a say in local elections, if the locals always end up being the Dem.
