It was unbelievable: As soon as Newt Gingrich failed to win both Alabama and Mississippi in the GOP race for president, most members of the mainstream media and political strategists with whom I talked readily admitted, off the record, that he was the most qualified among the Republican candidates to serve as president.
Now these are objective pros that have been around presidential politics for years. I have no doubt they were telling me the truth because these folks only tell you this stuff when it is relatively clear that the candidate is no longer a viable alternative.
The Gingrich campaign is pushing the concept that, by staying in the contest, Speaker Gingrich could help take away enough delegates to deprive Mitt Romney the numbers needed to have the GOP nomination locked up by the time the candidates reach the convention in Tampa, Fla.
Obviously, as a lifelong friend of Gingrich's, I am not going to argue with their decision to press forward. Their frustration is that their candidate knows more about foreign policy and defense matters in his little finger than the other two leading candidates know in their entire body.
It is likely they find it incredible that a man who could outdebate Barack Obama in virtually any format is now in this predicament. I don't blame them if they feel this way.
But the reality is that no camp agrees with any other camp's delegate math. Romney, who has spent a fortune to amass his delegates, believes the numbers suggest that he will have no problem locking the nomination up by or before the last contested state. And that may well be true....

“Newt as much as said today that if this thing goes to convention that none of the current candidates will be the nominee.”
Well, if Newt says this, then it must be true.
Right? Hello? Is anyone there?
Santorum is scary.
He is not nearly as scary as the witless comments of you Rick haters on this site.
We want a moral America!
Love it(and you) Naps!
Well it certainly seems that Obama can legislate immorality. I know you have a problem with that.
I am going to force these FREEPERS to get behind Santorum if it kills me. lol. Love ya too. This has been an incredible primary. The most principled candidate is running and some just don’t get it. Very frustrating but we will prevail.
What I’m saying is that you don’t let yourself get bogged down in these issues in the primary or the general election. I’m not saying you lie, or run away from the right to life, but on the other hand, you don’t get drawn into spending way too much of your time talking about “moral” issues. AFTER you get elected, then you can use executive power to whatever legal and constitutional extent you think you should, to encourage and incentivise moral behavior and lifestyles.
Could be true to some extent, but I don’t think that Santorum himself brought up much. The debate moderator brought up the birth control issue during a debate. Then the media is getting involved by asking questions. I am not saying that Santorum is 100 percent innocent but I don’t think he is necessarily the instigator.
I’ll never get behind Santorum, so be sure not to waste your time with me. I don’t need a Moralist-in-chief.
1,144 is looking harder and harder.
Yes, I do.
Obviously.
“The most principled candidate is running and some just dont get it.”
The country is going bankrupt and Santorum can’t stop talking about contraceptives. He’s either an idiot or he’s exploiting the evangelicals who just don’t get it. I agree with almost everything Santorum says about contraceptives, but “its the economy stupid”! Newt is the only one who is taking it to Obama on economic issues in a substantive way.
!
Listening to my local “Conservative” talk show host shill for Romney this morning.
Top three callers:
“It’s time to wrap this up”(translation: nominate Romney)
“Romney isn’t that bad”
“Romney is that bad but he’s better than Obama”.
Talk show host, “Mitt is more Conservative than you think”. scream.
It is disgusting that people are for Romney. I think quite a few FREEPERS would love Romney for President that is the ONLY excuse for the disgusting repulsive comments from FREEPERS about Santorum. I think Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum have been bashed the worst out of all politicians. Sarah Palin by the liberal press and Rick Sanotrum from FREEPERS and GOPE working together to destroy this conservative principled family values next President of the United States.
In the very unlikely event Santorum becomes the nominee, he will be demolished. Why his supporters can’t see that coming is beyond me. Just today there’s an article about him dooming internet porn, exploring the possibilities of Pres. Santorum cracking down on distributors and end users of internet porn. He is being portrayed as a religious fanatic and the portrayal is not getting any laughs for ridiculous.
Santorum’s image — his “optics” as they say now — will be the ruin of him, the party, and America (insofar as he is only helping Obama get reelected).
Then there’s Mrs. Santorum’s history. Dr. Allen is still alive and lucid and he would be a media sensation. Unlike, say, Newt’s ex or Cain’s accusers, Allen will have plenty of material and documentation.
It is positively insane to think the media won’t use him, and that it won’t hurt Santorum.
Santorum is kidding himself, as people do on ego trips, bent on winning a nomination he’d waste, and the country be damned but he must have the hollow victory.
