I mean, really. How dare you peasants tell the government what to do? How dare you tell them to stay out of your lives? Santorum 2012!
(VIDEO AT LINK)
"One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a Libertarianish right.
They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldnt get involved in the bedroom, we shouldnt get involved in cultural issues.
That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that Im aware of, where weve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.
- Rick Santorum
First off, the phrase radical individualism is something I expect to hear from a Saudi imam. Hell, I wouldnt be too surprised to hear it from leftists in this country. When I hear it from a Republican candidate for president, I sit blinking for a couple of minutes and then curl up in a ball under my desk, crying softly.
Secondly, I have to wonder: is Santorum insane, or even more out of touch with his base than any of the other candidates? This guy has the balls to whine about people wanting the government to leave them alone? Um, Ricky, Im pretty sure the top issue for most conservatives is government overreach. Theres this thing called ObamaCare. Heard of it?
However, the true Emmy award winner of this piece is when he disputes the notion that government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low. Youre absolutely right, bud. I hope you get up on a podium tonight and deliver, in that notoriously whiny timbre of yours, admonishment to all those non-traditional conservatives who wont shut up about lower taxes and less regulation. See how that flies in South Carolina. Rick Santorum is a statist theocrat. Ive said it before, and been challenged on it. I consider this quote to be a follow up to this endlessly disturbing piece from nine years ago. Rick Santorums agenda involves using government power to enforce his morality on the American people, based not on political or constitutional ideals, but on his religious views. He is as far removed from the Tea Party, and the concept of small-government conservatism, as Barack Obama.
But lucky us! We can also choose from a socialist who provided the blueprint for ObamaCare, a serial cheater and liar with an ego the size of Neptune, or an isolationist crank who wouldnt have stopped the Holocaust if it were occurring in present day. Johnnie Walker is my co-pilot.
I support the 21st Amendment which affirms the right of local authorities to make these decisions, and contradicts the argument that there exists a fundamental right to possession and smoking of controlled substances.
Mariner likes to argue with himself. Sometimes he wins.
Governments don't have rights, people do. Governments have POWERS, ceded to them by the people. You are upside down again.
So, if someone makes an Edison light bulb in the state, and sells it in the state, the FedGov has no POWER to say squat about it.
Same with cannibis. Although states do retain the POWER to regulate that traffic.

Santorum stated in an interview last week that decisions made in government do have moral and social consequences. The interviewer commented that moral/social and economic issues are intertwined.
While starting with Woodrow Wilson, amped-up by FDR, then kicked into high gear by LBJ’s social engineering, government created the moral decay in inner cities and decimated two-parent families. It cost the taxpayers billions to prop up his failed policies.
Promoting LIFE should be a major platform item in the Republican party. When people have a common respect for life, they have a stake in ensuring the means to protect it and encouraging policies that maintain prosperity.
You'll convince another 6 or 8 folks that they don't like you or your kind.
Post of the Day. Week. Month. Year so far. (And I'm an atheist!)
And that’s right where you are the supporter of a police state to enforce your moral absolutes.
“Bullcrap. Look at Franklin, who screwed anything with a heartbeat, or Jefferson, who was a Deist.”
Yes, they were religious men.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their CREATOR, certain rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
So, yes, your rights do not come from you. They come from God.
“I do have control of my actions.”
Uh huh. I see. So where do rights come from? Do they come from you?
“God will decide in the end, but I get to choose. And that, God gave me.”
Indeed, but you have to sacrifice autonomy in order to be with him. As Paul says, “you are not your own, you were bought for a price”.
“And if 10 basic rules were good enough for Him”
So what’s the first one?
“I am the Lord your God - you shall have no other God’s before me.”
Does that sound like it AFFIRMs autonomy, or is it saying, hey, You are Mine.
The abortion issue is a federal issue. It derives this status from the Declaration of Independence where life is listed as being the first of the unalienable rights. If abortion was merely a states issue, it would be possible for it to be legal in one or more of the states. Since the right to life is an unalienable right, it is not possible for state legislators or voters to confer these rights, or to deny them.
The Declaration and the Constitution are taken together as being our founding documents. Upon them, all else rests.
I’m a supporter of the constitution. I actually read the darn thing.
If you want to make it so that the community cannot regulate these things, then go ahead, and repeal the 21st. Because it’s right there.
That’s your right as a citizen of the United States, and that is the procedure to change the Constitution. Or you can ignore it like a certain occupant in the White House.
Your choice.
I've seen smarter goats, drunk on fermented mulberries.
Wisdom is not found there, but fervor, there is aplenty.

Should a state have authority under the Tenth Amendment to legalize the use and sale of pot, in your opinion?
Truth > Popularity.
Read the constitution. Yes, the constitution, grants certain rights to the government.
Among these rights are the right to regulate the transit of goods across the border. It also grants the state the right to form an assembly, explains how the people are to be represented, that elections are to be held every 4 years, etc.
It’s all there. One of the rights that the CONSTITUTION grants the government is the right to enforce tariffs on goods that enter the nation.
Go read it yourself.
The power you seek to regulate 'these things' remains with the States, under the Constitution.
But they DON'T fall within the pervue of the Feral Gooberment.
They can't keep their web-sites up after pissing off the internet, and you want them regulating morality?

And you are saying that the 21st Amendment apparently was repealed.
Did you not listen to the debate tonight? On healthcare, Santorum said that Obamacare should be expunged, and that the federal government had no place in enacting a health care plan. Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich said that he would replace Obamacare with his own version of Obamacare. Now, you tell me which one is for big government.
What is the difference between "personal autonomy" and "free will?"
I've heard him speak to this on numerous occasions. He says the Declaration of Independence answers the "why" question and the Consitution answers the "how" to accomplish what was laid out in the Declaration. Without BOTH, the meaning gets lost.
