Humble, you're one of the most active members of Free Republic. There's no doubt in my mind that others have spelled out the minute details of Palin's battles with the frivolous lawsuits while she was Governor, to you, many times.
But since it's Christmas, I'll give you the thumbnail sketch once again.
Palin was essentially in an indefensible position, and was either going to stay put and die, or move to better ground from which to fight.
The law in Alaska did not allow for a Governor to utilize the resources of the state government to defend against ethics lawsuits. She had to obtain her own defense attorneys, and pay them out of her own pocket.
She did this for a while, and successfully fended off the first suits, but they kept on coming. No sooner would her attorneys get one thrown out, than another would emerge.
Not only were her legal bills climbing into the stratosphere because of these lawsuits, she and her staff were forced to spend the bulk of their working time going through files to supply documents and information to Palin's attorneys and the court. They were not getting the people's business done.
As to the spiraling costs involved with these lawsuits, it became apparent rather quickly that the Palin family would be driven into bankruptcy without some financial assistance. A legal fund was set up for this purpose, and private individuals began to donate to it. Her enemies weren't about to let her fight back fair and square, so they got a judge to declare that her legal defense fund was illegal, and that it could not be used to pay for her legal defense in these matters.
So there she was - essentially out of ammo, and pinned down in a death trap. Her enemies could continue firing on her with an endless number of frivolous suits, but she couldn't fight back against them.
Palin chose to do the only thing a rational person could - she resigned the office.
Now, if after reading all that, you still think that she should be condemned for making the choice she did, well....all I can say is, Merry Christmas.
