Santorum has a quality that is hard to describe. He is touted by supporters as having solid beliefs and forcefully states them; however, his demeanor is one of a tentative bridegroom. He appears overwhelmed by the starpower of the other candidates and wilts into the background with a hurt/angry facial expression.

Just an observation, but one has to wonder how he would handle a combative Congress and foreign dignitaries.

That's a pretty good description. It reminds me of this one by Victor Davis Hanson ...

Rick Santorum does great when he answers directly the question asked. The more he avoids attacking others, or curbs his exasperation that his often superior answers don’t lead to political traction, the better he does. But somehow such an experienced and knowledgeable candidate always seems frustrated to the point of vexation.

IMHO, what you've observed is Santorum's personal sense of humility; noticeable mostly because none of the other candidates exhibit it.

And anybody, who can debate as well as Santorum does, can hold their own against any foreign dignitary, including our enemies, like Red China.
