Why I Am Done Defending Herman Cain
US News and World Report ^ | November 11, 2011 | Mary Kate Cary, former Bush 41 speechwriter

Posted on 11/13/2011 3:07:51 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

People have been asking me all week if conservatives will stick with Herman Cain, but I think he's got a bigger problem than the conservative vote. A lot more women than conservatives vote, and the women I've talked to are finished with him.

There's a new CBS poll which says that 38 percent of female Republican primary voters are "less likely to back him" now that more accusers have come forward. Among all registered voters, CBS reports that Cain has lost support among women since last month—from 28 percent in October to 15 percent now. My sense is that 15 percent of female registered voters remaining as Cain supporters may be a little high, because the poll was conducted before Cain's attorney started threatening any other potential accusers with the notion that they'd better "think twice" before coming forward.

This whole thing is a shame, because so many of us liked Herman Cain's ideas and business experience. I've been defending him for the last few weeks as he spoke out against the anonymous and vague charges. But they're not anonymous and vague anymore. There are faces, and names, and ugly stories to match. As Kathleen Parker put it, three accusers is a trend. Four is a tipping point.

Women who have worked in politics have seen his type before—casual with staff, jocular, kind of schmoozy. Fun at first, but then it becomes clear that they don't think the rules apply to them. After a while, there's an arrogance that sets in. Washington is full of bosses like that. I've worked for several.

Women don't like to talk about being sexually harassed because it's embarrassing. Life moves on and most of us would rather put bad incidents behind us. So for busy women—at least one of the accusers is a single mom with a teenage son—to come forward years later isn't easy. The fact that they're contemplating doing a joint press conference says to me they realize how high the stakes are, after they saw how Sharon Bialek's personal finances and work history were trashed. Safety in numbers.

These accusers who have come forward are about my age, and they seem very credible to me. They're not selling their stories to tabloids. They're not random women from all over the country, like some of former President Bill Clinton's accusers were. They all worked with Herman Cain specifically when he was at the Restaurant Association. They seem believable to me, and right now, he does not. I'm not defending him anymore.

Quoting Kathleen Parker tipped me off, if I didn't already suspect her as a Romneybot. Remind me who Miss Parker backed in 2008. I'm betting this woman never "defended" Mr. Cain in the first place. "Guilty until proven innocent" eh, Mary Kate? Yeah, the stakes are high, since Mr. Cain stands in between Gov. Romney and the nomination.

So Axelrod only had to come up with 4 women with dubious claims and that’s the magic number to get rid of the competition? He must be laughing at how easy this is.

That what made this smear so effective.

I think just about every woman has been sexually harassed or assaulted at some point in her life. Maybe not at work but in school, in public where ever.

I think there is a natural assumption in women to believe the accusers in these cases since it matches with her personal experiences.

Yes, I think this trend is troublesome but not fatal. As this story goes on and the facts comes out, I suspect a lot of that suspicion of Cain in women’s minds is going to be assuaged.

As for Parker, why anyone bothers paying any attention to her is a mystery. She is as genuine a Conservative as a $3 bill is real money

Done defending him, lady? Did you ever support him in the first place? I sincerely doubt it.

And if you had, there’s no way that US News would have asked you to write this article in the first place.

Yes, still wavering about these accusations! BUT, if I look at who and what the accusers are, it is very easy to have doubts. Seems they are Chicagans and/or with ties to the Democrats. A coincidence - not likely?

Seems too suspicious to me but of course, the sheeple that watch the standard MSM stations will never know the difference.

Politics is ugly and seems to be getting just a bit more ugly.

I wouldn’t put too much into this. Well know what we stand to lose if Romney gets the nomination. Nothing. I like Newt, one of my personal choices, but I’m concerned. His working knowledge of our political landscape is second to none, but his biggest drawback is that he lacks mass appeal. Obama is a perfect example of how appeal can trump substance; radical as hell, zero experience, but he connected with voters. Newt could win the nomination - I’d support him 100% - but I have doubts he will strike a chord with voters outside of the GOP base. Fair or not, the MSM will stereotype him as the old, boring, elitist Republican & it’s only a matter of time before they air his dirty laundry. Reagan was equally intelligent, but his passion & charisma - his innate ability to relate to the common man - is why he captured independents and “Reagan Democrats.” People want to be inspired, not talked down to. If it wasn’t for the media’s attacks on Cain, who led nationally (still does) & Iowa by double digits, would Newt even be in contention as the choice of his own party? Cain has the greatest appeal of any GOP candidate to reach across party lines and the left knows this. They will do all they can to destroy him. The only question is...why do we conservatives help them fulfill their agenda? Only we can elect our nominee!

Get over your bitterness about being cruelly jacked around by Palin.

Try to see the choices you have, without Mama Fizzly.

Good. Now pick one.

That's what you need to do.

We obviously don't run in the same circles since 100% of the women and men I've discussed this with are very upset with the MSM and the broads..........and a number of those women are democraps.

FWIW, their major complaint is men now being afraid to offer them compliments on their looks and dress for fear of being accused of harrassment......and rightfully so.
