Mike Huckabee had a fairly serious interview with Mitt Romney on Fox News tonight (no "Cat Scratch Fever" this time?) in which the current candidate shrugged off the Chris Christie wooing that is in part born of a rejection of Romney by donors and some establishment figures.
Per POLITICO's Emily Schultheis, who helpfully tuned in, Huckabee asked a question about how Romney contends with the repeated new candidates whose names get mentioned. Romney was all praise for Huckabee and his strengths:
Romney: "I think we want to win. I think the people in our party want to make sure we replace this president. And we want someone who can beat him and we want someone who can get the country back on track. I don't begrudge the fact that people are taking a good, hard look and if there's someone else willing to get in the race. Come on in, let us take a look at you, put you and under the microscope and see who has the best shot of replacing President Obama and getting the country on the right track again. You know, I'm not surprised that people are taking a very careful look. We had Donald Trump who was strong early on, Sarah Palin was very strong. Mike, I thought you might get in the race?"
Huckabee: "I thought I might, too. I couldn't do that and still do this talk show."(continued)

I'm bemused at Romney's ability to sell himself as a conservative in contrast to others who have a stronger case.
I understand, last time around, people moved to Romney against the loony McCain. I voted for neither because I voted early when I had other choices.
To my disillusionment it's unclear whether a viable alternative to Romney will emerge. Cain can make the case on his brilliant business career but Romney can make the case he's governed.
I like Newt's ideas, he clearly can get things done in D.C., I just wish they were in a more attractive candidate. I've moved beyond his baggage but I suspect too many won't.
Question: What does Mittens Romney stand for?
Answer: What he stands for depends on where he sits. Otherwise it’s nothing . . . absolutely NOTHING.
