RAYMOND N.H. New GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann charmed a backyard of Granite State voters yesterday with her trademark straight talk but bristled at comparisons to fellow Tea Party star Sarah Palin, telling the Herald shes got a style all her own.
We both have unique skill sets. I have great respect and admiration for Gov. Palin, I consider her a friend, but I have a unique skill set that I bring to the table, said Bachmann, 55, after announcing her presidential campaign to New Hampshire voters yesterday morning.
Andy Schwargler, 45, of Orford, N.H., drove more than an hour to see Bachmann, saying he appreciates her down-to-earth style.
I like the fact that she speaks her mind. I dont get the feeling that everything coming out of her mouth is a political calculation, he said.
Granite State political observers said in yesterdays Herald that former Palin backers are warming up to the Minnesota congresswoman, a claim that Bachmann supported during a wide-ranging interview with the Herald.
Weve made multiple trips here to New Hampshire and the momentum is only growing and building and exploding and people that we have talked to have called up and said they want to leave the candidate they thought they were going to support and support me, Bachmann said.
Both Bachmann and Palin are anti-abortion Tea Party favorites known for their independent streaks and challenging business as usual in Washington, D.C. Both also have a blunt, tell-it-like-it-is speaking style that resonates with voters.
Bachmann said that while shed like Palins endorsement, she wont be reaching out to her.
I would love to have Gov. Palins support in this effort. I dont have her cell phone number so I dont know how to get in touch with her, but I wish her well, Bachmann said. She added, The field is wide open . . . people can come into the race, but I also know that people have resonated with my message.
Bachmann dismissed claims that her high-profile gaffes have undercut her campaigns credibility. She said Monday that movie legend John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa, when it was actually serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
Those are the small issues that quite honestly no one cares about, because everywhere I go people are concerned about the economy, Bachmann said.
Exhibiting her feisty no-nonsense style, Bachmann told the amped-up New Hampshire crowd that shed run the White House with a titanium spine while touting her economic know-how and her ability to load a shotgun and speak on the fly.
President Bachmann will be banning the teleprompter from the White House, she said in a dig at President Obama. The American people have had enough. Theyve had it up to here. . . . President Obama, you are a one-term president.
I don't pretend to know whether the conservative champion will be Perry or Palin, but it will almost certainly be one or the other and we aren't likely to have a choice between them. Bachmann isn't going to be a factor in anyone’s decision.
Perry and Palin have to work this thing out soon. Palin might be able to start in the fall. Perry needs to get in gear this month if he's planning to make the race.
Meanwhile, Bachmann is just a warm up act and people are getting tired of waiting for the main event.
Is kook similar to, or the same as, flake?
I found the ‘don’t have her cell phone number’ comment a little odd also. Michele certainly has a way of contacting Sarah should she care to do so.
A rose is a rose...
At least Sarah has only 5 children for potential embarassment.
I agree about the negativity but that’s what we do here, unfortunately.
BTW, congrats on the promotion.
You must not be reading a lot on here. I have seen Bachmann called a RINO, a democrat, a liberal, and other names USUALLY reserved for Chris Matthews and the MSM. Again, I agree with your theory but I sadly do not think Palin has enough standing to wait until the fall. She has more to prove, in showing and debate. It is Perry like it or not and I sadly do not see Palin as a contender until she gets more Independent votes.Indy votes are pivotal.
Being responsible for 23 foster children is an outstanding thing to do. Just tell the truth about it.
I think much of the problem here is that Michele is doing negative things lately, no so much that we’re commenting on it.
Only a few weeks ago Michele was a darling here. Her destruction is of her own making. I still like her a lot, but she’s seeming less and less presidential.
Pointing that out does not make us for Romney or any Rino. I also like several other candidates including the also undeclared Governor of Texas.
Someone needs to get to Ed Rollins and warn him or fire him.
That is a ridiculous overstatement and you know it.
If you don’t, well, what can I say? No personal attacks allowed.
Quote of the year. It is sad. The DUmmies reading this are thanking the ones bashing a good conservative Bachmann for creating divide and doing their Soro's appointed jobs of bashing conservatives.
Oh, thanks a lot for reminding us of that lame lineup we had running in 2008. What a joke. I was for Fred also but he never acted like he really wanted it and couldn’t seem to bring himself to criticize McCain.
We have a much better choice this time, Praise the Lord.
Michele Bachmann was NEVER a darling here. She was not brutally bashed as she has been but never a darling. There are intellectual non groupie, beat Obama mentality; independent, common sense voters that like Bachmann’s abolish IRS politics and intelligence. She does not deserve the name calling. It is wrong.
Well, I seem to remember Michele being something of a darling. I don’t have time or inclination to prove it, but maybe someone does.
AND I’m not seeing a lot of name calling. I’m seeing more dismay at some of her inadvised statements and stances.
I think you’re over-reacting.
BTW, here’s some more emperical data suggesting Bachmann is right about Palin supporters.
From the Suffolk University polls from April and June, we see that Sarah Palin support dropped from 8% in april, to 4% in june. Bachmann went from 3% in april to 11% in june.
It is reasonable to think that the 4% that Palin lost could have moved to Bachmann.
God help us, I had a vision this morning and saw how Rick Perry could actually ride all the way to the convention and end up getting the nomination. I wouldn’t mind that all that much. I think he’d be a good manager of the country and it is always forgotten that that is the first thing a president MUST have. OTOH, we’d have to be watching him like a hawk just like we did with W for when he starts getting up to his usual tricks with things like the HPV mandatory vaccines and the Trans Texas Corridor. But voting for him wouldn’t revolt me like it did with Capt. Queeg.
If you want us to read your posts, then try to organize your thoughts well enough to say it quickly and plainly.
I’m not going to wade through long unfocused ramblings, to seek a possible answer to my direct questions to you.
Post 119 was actually meant for your post 95, not 96.
No Romney Charles.
