Sahil Kapur has a good piece up at TNR about the Tea Partys plans to go after Mitt Romney because hes not the rock-solid fiscal conservative they want. According to Kapur, FreedomWorks, the Dick Armey-led Tea Party organization, is threatening to uneash part of its $25 million treasure trove in an attempt to sink his candidacy. Meanwhile, Joe Miller, the Tea Party candidate who took on Lisa Murkowski in Alaska and lost last November, has his own political action committee dedicated to going after Mitt Romney where it matters most: New Hampshire.
Last November, the Tea Party swept into state houses and the House of Representatives, but radical candidates like Sharon Angle, who crowded our more moderate Republicans for their partys nomination, cost Republicans control of the U.S. Senate. The lesson seemed to be that in more local races the Tea Party was a Republican God-send, but for national office, it was often a curse. Now were talking about the presidencythe stakes are even higher. Romney is Republicans best hope at unseating Obama in a tough economic climate, and the Tea Party wants to repeat its mistakes and make sure he doesnt get the nomination.
But FreedomWorks told Kapur they arent too worried about a repeat of last November:
I dont think we want to get stuck with another disappointment as a Republican president. If the guy at the top of the ticket goes against the free market, goes against what we believe in, then were not really motivated by just getting a Republican in office.
This is bad news for the Republican Party, or at least traditional party elites, who really do just want to get Obama out of the White House and install a Republican It will be hard enough to battle Obama next fall, and even harder if the Tea Party puts its money into defeating Republicans best candidate.
God didn't abandon us, we abandoned Him.
The GOP opted for Dole too and that mess lasted a lomg time.
I agree! Usually I donate and contribute my time and energy to GOP elections. Recently Mittens sent his brother to our town to have a “fact finding” lunch to which I was invited. Never showed.
If this man is our candidate, I won’t give a nickel or raise a finger for him. When is the GOP going to wake up?
WHEN THE LAME STREAM MEDIA SAY THAT MITT-FOR-BRAINS IS “winning” BECAUSE HE GOT 33% REMIND THEM THAT 67% WANTED SOMEONE ELSE
And since everyone else is more conservative, then 2/3 DO NOT WANT RINO Romney
“God didn’t abandon us, we abandoned Him”.
Good point, VL. God never leaves us. When I have been adrift in my life, it’s because I lost my way. Our Republic, at the hands of some truly clueless and yes, evil people, is being held hostage.
Whether or not our country can be saved remains to be seen.
I have a prediction that on July 4th Sarah will announce, from Wasilla her bid for the presidency.
Amid the celebration of our Republic’s Independence an Eagle will spread her wings and ready to defend our Republic.
Maybe a little too poetic but that is how I think of her.
Again, I'm probably among the least religious people in this here room but--allowing for Pascal's Wager:
Who abandoned whom?
The Bible and pretty much all of recorded human history is really just one big long story of human societies "getting right with God," falling away, getting right again, falling away, getting right, falling away, and on and on and on.
It's what we do. Human nature.
You can substitute to remove any religion-specific tint "getting right with God" with "living decently and honestly with each other" and "falling away" with "succumbing to the baser urges of human nature", but the story remains the same.
Old story. Making too much of it. And I love dogs. Move on.
