American Way: Barack Obama is no shoo-in for re-election in 2012
The London Telegraph ^ | April 2, 2011 | Toby Harnden

Washington is the city of conventional wisdom. Denizens of the District of Columbia cling to a prevailing notion for dear life even when all evidence begins to point in another direction. Then, quick as a flash, the mood shifts and another idea takes hold.

So it has been with President Barack Obama and his 2012 re-election chances. Back in November, when his party was on the receiving end of the worst electoral pummelling since 1948, Obama was a dead cert one-term president, a Jimmy Carter with bells on heading for oblivion.

A compromise tax deal, the ratification of an arms treaty and the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell gay ban in the military later and Obama was once more a colossus sitting astride the American body politic mocking those idiot Republicans queuing up to lose in 2012.

Despite Obama’s halting ambivalence over what to do with Libya, the continued unpopularity of his signature healthcare reform and an ailing economy, the Washington cognoscenti remains convinced. Altogether now: Obama’s a shoo-in. You hear it again and again.

Last week, however, a Quinnipiac poll found that Obama had the worst re-election figures of his presidency with 48 percent of voters disapproving and just 42 percent approving of his performance. In an election now against a generic Republican – any opponent – he would lose.

“Ah-ha!” say those in the know. “He won’t be running against a generic Republican. He’ll be running against someone with flaws, who can be painted as an extreme right-wing nut case.”

Given that 82 percent of Washingtonians voted for Obama in 2008 (the figure was probably much higher among journalists) this is standard fare in these parts....

We probably wouldn’t be in as big a mess if Hillary had won, but she would probably would have had a much stronger lock on a second term...

Hillary and Obama are identical. She’s just louder and dumpier. They are both hideous commies.

Depends on how much we dissect each other on the way

Ah-ha Toby, I've got news for you! Mother Theresa could be running on the Republican ticket and our vaunted American media would find flaws and immediately tag her as a "right-wing nut case"

Care to report something I don't know?" Yawn. . .

How many years ago would it have been unthinkable that we would have a POTUS who's voting record in Congress was to the left of those in the Socialist Party?

And how many years ago would it have been unthinkable that after this same guy as POTUS after trashing the economy and socializing everything that moves would even be the slightest concern about being re-elected?

We're living in an alternate universe. Doc Brown's space-time continuum has fractured. Is that a black hole I see ahead?

I attended a meeting with Arthur Laffer earlier this year and he said that Obama will not be re-elected with the current and projected economic numbers by the time of next year’s election. The latest Gallup survey has unemployment at 10% and underemployment at almost 20%.

Obama won with 52.7 per cent of the vote over the hapless John McCain, not exactly a land slide. How many voters has he won over since then? What per cent of the electorate is better off?

Gas prices have doubled and food cost inflation is in the 20 to 40% inflation range. How many more people has this won over?

Obama will spend a billion dollars to garner 40% of the vote like Carter did.

It’s weird. If you read the April 2011 British edition (Daisy Lowe cover) of GQ, not the proto-homo US version, there is section of fictionalized 0bama obituaries. They are somewhat morbid and bizarre. Not in a childish way though.

Wow, I was totally prepared to take this article seriously until I got to that line.

Have you seen the results of the '10 midterms. There is no more white guilt. Just white scared to death.

This aint the environment that is going to get this stiff elected like last time. All his easy roads are blocked.

That’s also a future map of the United States after it breaks up. Massive election fraud in 2012 might be the triggering event. There will be a rump north-eastern socialist United States and a west coast enclave. The more conservative interior counties and regions of the west coast will join the new North American entity.

The new entity will take the United States Constitution and fortify it with elucidating amendments and clarifying word changes to end the leftward ratchet of any future political class.

Eventually the socialist rump portions of the country will be begging to be admitted to the new entity - on the new entity’s terms. The Phoenix will rise from its own ashes.
