State of the Mitt (Laughable)
The Perpetual Post ^ | October 21, 2010 | Christian Heinze and Dani Alexis Ryskamp

Mitt Romney is shaking hands, kissing babies, making endorsements, and dropping money in every state in the nation in a way that suggests he’s in it for the long haul to 2012. Unfortunately, I’m not feeling Romney’s chances for the GOP presidential nomination. He’s a workhorse in a party addicted to, if not Thoroughbreds, at least some well-spruced Clydesdales.

Romney is, as Politico notes, “an establishment kind of guy in an insurgent kind of party.” He’s putting in the work, but he’s not getting either the name recognition of a Newt Gingrich or the camera recognition of Sarah Palin. In a GOP/Tea Party/right wing that is increasingly enjoying its histrionic moment in the spotlight, Romney is the guy working nights and weekends who nevertheless will never be promoted, because no one even knows his name. It’s going to be far too easy for the Tea Party types to follow the shiny object in 2012 – and it won’t be Mitt.

That said, a Mitt Romney victory could well be a testament to a country in which sign-brandishing citizens make the news, but the establishment makes the decision. I don’t think much of Romney’s ability, if any, to turn out the base, and I find a Palin endorsement of him laughably incongruent. But if Mitt can keep shaking the right hands, kissing the right babies, and (most importantly) mailing the right checks, he may well come out on top by pulling states no one else has yet bothered to court – places like Maryland and Kansas, for instance.

She most certainly would carry the great state of Kansas!

He would be the next in a line that began with Candidate Dole and Candidate McCain. We know where they got us.

Back in the very early primaries of '08, I would have bet hard cash that there was zero way in hell McCain would end up the nominee. I wasn't even worried about him becuase the idea of him getting it was so far-fetched. The dread I felt when he did get the nomination was chilling, all the more because I had so overestimated people vs. machine.

Romney is the machine. Fear of that same chill upon his pulling off what none of us even remotely think he can, is too fresh from McCain. Romney is BAD NEWS.

I say we nuke him from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Figuaratively speaking, of course.

No one should ever forget that the blue states can pick the Republican presidential nominee, especially in a crowded primary field where several fairly popular conservatives split the votes in the red states, and a candidate such as McCain or Romney wins the blue states.

The field with many candidates with 10% to 20% support could help Romney. And still no potential candidate is polling above the low 20%’s.

There is no candidate other than Romney who is more sublimely effective at alienating the Republican base while venting huge sums of money into the atmosphere.

He may lack judgment, vision, purpose, competence, or intelligence, but he is quite talented at making the 3rd rate GOP operatives with whom he surrounds himself rich.

Romney is a shill and he knows it.

Watch as the 2011/2012 years get progressively worse. What then? The GOP will be in the dumper and the Democrats will now have a chance to continue the destruction yet again.

That’s why Palin has essentially detached herself from the RNC. She knows only a third party will win the 2012 election. People are fed up (or will be 100% fed up soon) and conservatives will put their eggs into a third party basket. Whether it’s a “Tea Party” or Constitution Party variant remains to be seen. But you can better believe continuing with the GOP in 2012 will be like hitching your wagon to a Yugo.

Even if the Republicrats win in 2012, the carnage will continue and a “third party” will win in 2016. Choose now or choose later.

I know what you're saying, but we didn't have a full-blown citizen rebellion going on during the 2008 primary. The Tea Parties sprang up partially because of the McCain nomination disaster, which led to the election of the Marxist Kenyan, and the beginning of our national nightmare.

The mood and heightened awareness of the center-right will not allow a shallow, establishment RINO like Romney to carry the day in 2012. I expect him to be soundly rejected, should he run.

Given the current mood of the country, only Tea'publicans need apply.

You make excellent points for hope, Windflier. As you and others here often do, you lift my spirits.

Disgust is hardly the word for what I'd feel if that nanny-stater nightmare got the nomination.

Romney seriously doesn’t get it.

All he had to do to be president was, in the midst of the full-melt-down-demoralization the GOP went through after the election, was jump into the middle of the mosh pit, right into Obama’s face, and start swinging. Go around the country speaking out against everything O was trying to do, getting people to get their confidence back, encouraging them, backing candidates in close races, getting the right people elected, and helping to bring the Obama runaway train to a stop while leading a lost GOP back to its constitutional roots.

He could have done that, and he’d be the front runner right now regardless of his iffy past.

He didn’t. A couple of others did, and one of them will be president. Not him. He thinks its all about polishing his resume. He never understood that his fight was about something bigger than politics, which is why he will never be president.

regarding romney “putting in the hard work”. Please. Romney has slunk around hiding in the tall grass as Sarah Palin has gone out to the front lines of every battle, taken on every major obama policy, taking every sling and arrow as mittwipe hides in that tall grass nervously biting his nails while sending out his anonymous paid henchmen/henchwomen to slander Palin as not being a “serious human being”.

Just say “No”, Mitt! Most of us aren't interested in what you're peddling! You're just the McCain.2 version of what ails us.

I agree. Romney had many opportunities to latch onto some painfully obvious truths, repent of his RINO mistakes, and commit (for real) to sound and sane conservative principles, but he refused to do so. His chance has come and gone, and will not return in this lifetime.

Romney's "HARD WORK" throwing the last election to Obama:

"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

The Palmetto Scoop reported:
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

Poor sport spoiler Romney doing what he does best:

Novak: "Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign"

Said Novak: "The rumors were traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson
."

"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Mitt Romney, Carpetbagger UT,CA,MA,NH,Mexico) lost Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."
