I couldn't make myself stay for the entire Glenn Beck rally held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. But I did hang around long enough to get a sense of the occasion.
Beck wants to "reclaim honor." He wants to "restore God," along the lines of the Founding Fathers' convictions. (He didn't mention that Thomas Jefferson was a deist.) Beck gave Sarah Palin a spot. Her presence signified evangelical Christianity, and her soldier son lent credibility.
My major impression of the Beck rally, however, was not its content, but the huge number of people that filled the space. Beck spoke of 500,000. More sober independent estimates yielded a figure of 87,000. These folks in their numbers have responded positively to the Beck-Limbaugh-Hannity,-tea party critique of the condition of this nation under President Barack Obama.
According to Beck, Obama has "a deep-seated hatred of white people," an accusation he later retracted. Obama, in the eyes of this crowd is a socialist, a communist, an alien, a Muslim and a Hitler. At bottom, all this name-calling signifies that Obama is "not one of us."
Polls are full of Obama negatives. His popularity rating stands at 43 percent. Seventy-eight percent think the country is on the wrong track. Unemployment has risen to 9.6 percent. The "summer of recovery" touted by Vice President Joe Biden is nowhere in evidence.
Some of Obama's popularity troubles stem from the very success of his presidential campaign. Remember the enthusiasm generated - especially among the young and independents - by "Yes We Can?" Remember the promises of a new day in Washington, a fresh approach to bipartisan cooperation? Now, the motto might be: "No, we can't - at least not right away. Be patient." And while the economy and jobs were the first priority of the nation, Obama concentrated his effort on health care. Senate Republicans vented their spleen by using the filibuster threat to deny majority rule. Their goal: Make Obama fail. Did they also want the nation he leads to fail?
It's true that most of Obama's troubles are not of his own making. George W. Bush left office with a huge deficit, two unpopular wars and growing unemployment. Fair or not, after a four year term, these troubles will be fully owned by Obama. The hole is so deep that economic Band-Aids will not make it go away. We face the possibility of that dreaded double-dip recession. Who can we blame? Obama-that alien socialist, that's who.
Obama and Hillary Clinton are currently sponsoring a Mideast peace process, featuring a Washington meeting between Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas. I predict failure. Obama endorses talking to Iran and introducing sanctions to prevent nuclearization. I predict it won't work. Obama will be blamed.
Therefore, in 2012, the Republicans (who may have already taken the House) will have a good shot at the presidency. Who will be their nominee? The field is not all that impressive. There's Mitt Romney; he's used goods. There's Newt Gingrich; I don't think so. Tim Pawlenty and Bobby Jindal; little name recognition. And then there's Sarah Palin.
I think, under these unusual circumstances, that Palin has a fair shot at becoming president of this United States. There are those huge numbers of tea partiers - the Beck-Limbaugh crowd. They, along with Obama's failed promises, could turn the tide to Sarah. Impossible, you say? As Keith Olberman remarks, "That woman is an idiot." Well, perhaps. But that didn't stop George W. Bush from being elected and re-elected.
Now imagine Palin is president. Will she stay for the full four years? I predict she'll opt out after a year or two in the hot seat in order to pursue a "higher cause." Making money and selling books.
If you're still reading this, I will admit that Obama could perform some miracles and make a comback in 2012. On the other hand, we are experiencing a genuine silly season in American politics. Believe it. Sarah could be President Palin.
Why yes, yes she can!
And WILL!
His Obama tingle was so loud that I had to stop reading after a couple of ‘graphs.
He didn't miss that. LOL!
The short bus ??
True, if by "more sober" you mean completely full of crap.
Quit reading right here:
“More sober independent estimates yielded a figure of 87,000”
For what it’s worth, Waterloo IA has about 15% black population, so you can probably figure which way the newspaper leans.
It is, however, Michele Bachman’s home town...
Yes, I lived in Central Iowa (tiny Kelley, near Ames and then Des Moines) from 1974 to 2002.
He missed the extra silly season in editorials and alleged news articles.
LOL
Someone actually got paid to write this?
when you see an asshole cling to 87K as a number, stop reading, the rest is crap, too
