Ben Anderstone will never forget the energy and optimism he felt surrounding President Obama's election in 2008 — the first year Anderstone could vote.
"In the weeks leading up to the election, my Facebook page was just completely lit up with politics and people debating the various positions on issues," said Anderstone, 20, of Tacoma. "It was an exciting time.
"But this year," he said, "I'm just not seeing that.... Now people are more inclined to talk about how broken and ineffective the system is."
Young voters flexed their political muscle in 2008, helping put Obama in the White House: Exit polls showed Obama drew 66 percent of voters under 30, compared with just 45 percent of voters 65 and older.
The 2008 election also marked the first time since 1992 that a majority of voting-age Americans under 30 turned out, according to the nonpartisan Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).
Getting those young voters back to the polls this year is critical for Democrats' hopes of hanging on to majorities in Congress, particularly in the Senate.
But with the economy struggling, U.S. troops still in Afghanistan and Iraq, domestic issues stalled amid partisan wrangling, and no presidential race at the top of the ballot, that won't be easy.
"It's not that I'm disappointed in Obama, but things haven't really improved much," said David Ruiz, 22, a Capitol Hill resident and University of Washington student.
"I'm sure young voters will rally again to back Obama for a second term (in 2012)," Ruiz said. "But I don't think there's a lot of attention this year."
Democrats have cause for concern: The party in power typically loses congressional seats in a midterm election, and Republicans are working to transform widespread anti-government sentiment into support for their candidates.

I am guessing when Mom and Dad explained to the kids that due to all this Hope-n-Change® there would be no further hand outs and the kids would have to get a job to pay for their college and housing costs.
Its a good lesson for these kids to learn early. Elections have real life consequences.

I read DU almost every day, and those who disclose their age in one way or another (mentioning the number of kids, or parents in their 80s, or their grad degree) not to mention those who just mention their age straight out -

Years ago there was a test in the Weekly reader (remember that in school) Lib vs. Conservative - it was in the Jr. High School edition.
You took the test and it told you which you were. As we weren’t voting yet (this was in the 70’s in NY) the class was interested. We all took it and discussed the answers in class. One guy (One!) came out as conservative. Every single other teen was liberal, including me.
But I took the test home and asked my mom to answer the questions, and to my amazement she answered opposite me on every question - and explained why.
It turned out that she understood the ramifications of each question, and reasoned me through them. It took me years to realize that every single lib “touchy feely” point has strings and bands attached to it. You can’t feed everyone in the world without bankrupting yourself, for instance.
It’s part of an intelligent, logical process of living that high school kids really don’t understand yet. Sort of like how babies think you disappear under the blanket.
These kids all expected Obama to really change the world. Now they see how it is just not that easy. I think they got a rude awakening.
My guess is because true libs are brain damaged adults.
Young people aren’t really liberal, they just have stars in their eyes, and don’t think things through properly.

True, the GOALS of starry-eyed libs are often fine. Peace, everyone being well off, “justice,” everyone having good health care - the problem is they need to realize that these utopian ideals require the enslavement of themselves and their fellow man, and then they still don’t work.
