Palin falls short of conservative expectations (Holier-than-thou alert)
The Knoxville News-Sentinel ^ | July 11, 2010 | Stan Giles

The religious right's fascination with Sarah Palin befuddles me. I just don't get it! Her lifestyle and qualifications fall short of what I would expect the religious right to embrace in a candidate for high office.

By way of disclosure, I fit the profile of the religious right - I am a social conservative with strong faith values. Thus when Senator McCain invited her to join his presidential ticket I was open to this unknown outsider, but within weeks I became quite underwhelmed by her candidacy. Yet the religious right mostly went gaga over her, seeing her as a religious resurrection of Ronald Reagan. Newsweek magazine recently called her the new face of that old movement.

I have been to Wasilla, Alaska, and by coincidence she attends the same church as my wife's cousin. I have heard she was a good mayor of that fine city - no small task I might add. However, she floundered at rather basic questions involving national security and economics - subjects not critical to mayors, but pretty crucial to presidents - and I became skeptical of her presidential qualifications. To repeat a hackneyed phrase, she seemed a mile wide and an inch deep when it came to substantive policy issues.

Her supporters attributed such criticisms to the "liberal media," and claimed she was ambushed by CBS' Katie Couric. I watched that interview and frankly found Couric's questions quite reasonable, even lightweight. Some were softballs designed to be driven out of the park! Yet Palin swung and missed like a five year-old at a T-ball game.

The religious right, while advocating traditional family values, has embraced one who, shall we say, has not exactly lived by them.(continued)

".... The religious right’s fascination with Sarah Palin befuddles me. ..."

Maybe because a true Christian understands the human heart. Sarah is like us. She's not perfect, she makes mistakes & she's doing the best she can.

I can see differing with some political views, but taking cheap shots at her intelligence, her ability to handle her family while doing other things is being mean & slimy for no good reason.

I admire her as a woman, her energy, her strong stand for life and for so many other things.

The last crack about her looks really says it all about guy who wrote this hit piece!

"The Religious Right." The guy managed to lose me in three words. His case is actually that one of his stereotypes seems to him incompatible with another of his stereotypes and he just doesn't get why they don't all see things his way.

It's just a guess, and perhaps the sample size isn't very large, but it seems to me that Mr. Giles is rather condescending and not particularly bright. One wonders who, exactly, he means by "religious right" - a bunch of unlettered fanatics who run shrieking from the accusation of sin? Well, he's accusing, and they're not running. And Giles apparently finds that hard to figure out.

Hey Stan, seems that flood in Tn washed yer hair away.

Pity Obama wasn't there to intervene with FEMA, Had they gotten there at all they might have prevented the flood waters from washing away your brain.

I notice that libs think Christians stand for totally different things than they do. They always act perplexed when corrected.

For instance, most libs think Christian conservatives look down on people who have had babies out of wedlock. They think we are racist. They think we hate dancing, rock and roll etc. The Jewish libs think we hate Jews. They think we are all repressed and beat our wives.

They think we are seeking to start a Christian dictatorship where we will drag out and hang gays! Several times I’ve seen that expressed, that gays get frightened when Conservatives win because they think we want to put them in camps, or some such strangeness. They have a totally erroneous stereotype of us.

They get all in a tizzy because we don’t follow their ideas of whom we are supposed to like or not like. They never could get over that we didn’t crucify Palin because her daughter got pregnant out of wedlock, or cast Rush out because he got addicted to his prescriptions.

Every so often you can tell a troll because they are playing at what they think we are.

I especially remember the story of the woman journalist who passed as a Christian in a church to write a book on us, and she was frustrated because she couldn’t draw anyone into racist or backbiting conversations. Because that’s what they think we are, and they don’t realize it’s a figment of their imagination.

That whole “hate the sin, love the sinner” thing seems to elude the conceptual grasp of leftists, I’m afraid.

You are very much on the mark.

Funny thing is, they claim to be tolerant and spiritual.

This article is nothing more than a smear piece, to make Sarah seem as if she is rudderless and without experience.

Historically the religious right has focused on the family, placing great emphasis on parenting, but with Palin an obvious question loomed: How does one find time to govern a state or a nation with five kids at home, one of which has special needs demanding extra care? If your husband is on the North Slope earning a living, just who is raising the kids when you are running the state or country? Something has to give.

Prolly best to elect a clown who doesn't give a darn about the kids or the country. Party day and night.Yeah thats the ticket!

Woo Woo! anything goes! Obama is a librotard!

Foreign Policy? Party!

Economy? Party!

Woo Woo! Sir Paul McCartney Thinks I'm great!

While I like Sarah, and think most of the criticism levied at her here by concerned conservatives (and their contemporaries over at the Daily Kos) are ridiculous, it can’t be denied that she does have a group of people who could give Obamists a run for their hero-worshipping money.

But at least, to date, no starlets have come out saying they’d clear a path of picked-up plastic cups for her, and no third-rate musicians have made glassy-eyed cult-like “yes we can” videos. When that happens, then we can talk about how irrational conservatives are about Sarah. Until then, even the most over-the-top Palin supporter glows with an aura of enlightenment and pure reason compared to the ignorant stooges who gave us Obama.

“It is Newt now.”

Yes, because one lecherous, intern-molesting cheater in the White House wasn’t enough. Maybe “Character Counts” was just a slogan, after all?

I believe that the Left projects their own faults on the rest of us. That way they can justify taking more of our freedom away. The latest war on obesity comes to mind.

There seem to be several articles this week where the initial 2008 media hits on Palin are recounted, partially excused, or slightly amended. It makes me think that there is a co-ordinated purpose to remind people about how Gov. Palin was perceived initially. This effort is probably intended to counter her attempts to re-define herself through Facebook, FoxNews, Going Rogue, and her speaking engagements. The hope is that by restating the lie, that it will get a new life.

I don’t like being too suspicious of other Republicans, but it’s such an ineffectual and amateurish tactic that it brings to mind ineffectual and amateurish “leaders” in the moderate wing of the party.

Each of the assertions that are already proven false but are again spit out, need to be batted down and this tactic exposed for what it is.
