There isn' a dimes worth of difference between Obama's usage of the phrase "Special Olympics" and now Emanuel's usage of the word "retarded".

That is the point of our disagreement, as I disagree with your opinion of the two statements, because, as I explained, Obama clearly was comparing his performance to the special olympics. Obviously if I agreed with you, I'd have made the comment on one of the Obama threads on the subject. Since I didn't, I wouldn't have.

A reference to the special olympics is pretty clearly referencing disabled kids.

Okaay.

Comparing one to the athletic games that retarded people play is a more clear reference to disable people than comparing one directly to the condition that retarded people suffer??

LOL, got it.

(Yes, we disagree)

"I'm a big Sarah fan, but this time she went seriously astray."

I'm not a fan and Sarah comes off as a hyper-sensitive hypocrite who is employed by a network who broadcasts and hosts "Anthony and Jimmy Norton " from the Opie & Anthony show. Weekly, these guys not only ridicule but take pride in their offensive jokes about "retards" whose sole purpose in life, they say is "ruining family photos". Shawn Hannity has defended these guys even after they were fired for promoting and broadcasting live anal sex in a Catholic church. Since then two of their members have been hired by Fox to appear on Redeye and I haven't heard a peep from St Sarah. Hey Sarah publicly demand your network fire your co-workers who proudly ridicule "disappointments" and "rertards" while Shawn pats them on the back or simply, Shut the Hell Up! Your move.

We don’t call them “retarded”, we call them “disabled”.

And the special olympics is for disabled people, not just for mentally challenged people.

And yes, saying “I’m so bad at bowling, I aught to play in the special olympics” is a much more obvious affront to those who play in the special olympics than a use of a slang term that has become through political correctness a “derogatory term”.

It is clear that Rahm didn’t mean to denigrate retarded people by comparing them to senators. It is clear that Obama was under the mistaken impression that he would be able to beat the people who compete in the special olympics, because he has no respect for their abilities.

IN other words, Obama was in fact showing ignorance and malice. He was like Eric Cartman, pretending to be “disabled” so he could win the special olympics, only to lose ever single event because hte real special olympians are actually very very good at what they do, and us average abled people wouldn’t have a chance of beating them.

So Obama, looking at his bad bowling score, and saying that it was like a special olympics performance, was denigrating special olympians. That is so obvious that I wouldn’t ever have expected anybody to complain about it — and they didn’t.

On the other hand, it is clear that Rahm was just trying trash-talk his own party’s senators, and didn’t think twice about actual disabled people. There is no rational interpretation of his words that would suggest he was making fun of down syndrome children. He SHOULD apologize for what he said, because it is crass and childish, but not because he was making fun of retarded people by calling senators retarded.

That’s like saying that if you call someone a bastard, you are making fun of kids whose parents aren’t married.

This isn’t about Sarah Palin, it’s about conservatives falling over each other to jump on the PC bandwagon. I can’t help that Sarah is part of it, but only a syncophant would hold their tongue simply because they support the candidate making a foolish complaint.

"This isn’t about Sarah Palin,...

BS! When Sarah Palin calls for a senior administration official's resignation, it is about Sarah. Sarah needs to be consistent in her outrage and call for the firing/resignation of any and all Fox employees who've disparaged/ridiculed the mentally disabled, otherwise she comes off looking like Hannity, a partisan fraud.

What?

First you lecture about the correct terminology we are supposed to use and then you lecture about conservatives who are supposedly falling over each other jumping on the PC bandwagon. Your two points-of-view as stated above are hypocritical.

This isn’t about Sarah Palin... ...I can’t help that Sarah is part of it, but only a syncophant would hold their tongue simply because they support the candidate making a foolish complaint.

Okay that's what you think.

I never said this was about Sarah and I only said that both the Obama statement and the Emanual statement were equivalent. So your "only a sycophant would hold their tongue" comment posted to me doesn't logically follow from anything that I said to you.

As I said, comparing ones bowling skills to the skills of a disabled person playing in the Special Olympics is not a clearer reference to disable people than comparing one directly to a condition that disabled people suffer.

I would add, it's only a more politically incorrect one...ironically.

Not hypocritical, contradictory. And sarcastic. Your complaint was that the un-PC use of the word "retarded" was the same affront to the disabled as Obama saying that Special olympians were really bad at their sports. I was illustrating that the whole complaint about "retard" was about political correctness, not an attack on the disabled.

I never said this was about Sarah and I only said that both the Obama statement and the Emanual statement were equivalent. So your "only a sycophant would hold their tongue" comment posted to me doesn't logically follow from anything that I said to you.

But in post 20, you said: So much for objectively when Sarah is involved.

It was clear you were accusing me of taking contradictory views simply because Sarah was involved. I was answering that argument -- which is a perfectly logical thing to do since you raised the point in the discussion, even if you forgot about it later.

As I said, comparing ones bowling skills to the skills of a disabled person playing in the Special Olympics is not a clearer reference to disable people than comparing one directly to a condition that disabled people suffer.

You've never explained why you believe a phrase which is clearly in general public use in a way that clearly is not meant to apply to disabled people (effin retarded) is equivalent to a clear reference of the skills of disabled people in the special olympics.

Look up the term "special olympics", and you will find references to disabled people competing in the special olympics.

Look up the term "effin retarded", or "libtard", or "liberal retard" and you will find definitions indicating the phrases are slurs on the people being addressed -- you won't find references to disabled people.

That's because the term "retarded" as a general prejorative used against people you don't think highly of has come into general use, and is only still related to disabled people because of political correctness, and only when it is useful politically.

I have never before here at FR seen a single person complain about the use of the term "libtard" or the phrase "liberal retard" or "they are retarded", suggesting that it was an insult to downs syndrome children. None of the posters who have screamed about how insensitive Rahm's comments were have previously attacked any conservative for using the term.

Meanwhile, we never saw a person defend Obama's attacks on the disabled playing in the special olympics. You said so yourself. But you've seen multiple freepers on this and other threads denouncing this complaint about the term "retarded". Which, far from proving your point, is a clear sign that many of us do see it differently.

You tried to suggest that the two were the same, even though clearly I didn't agree. You then claimed that the reason I didn't see them as the same was because of Sarah Palin's involvement.

Do you still feel that I am purposely pushing an opinion I can't support in order to attack Sarah Palin? Or are you willing to admit that, while you disagree, I have stated an opinion that I can clearly defend, and that seems to be heartfelt?

LOL. I never thought that.

Charles, your detailed opinions, right or wrong, are always heartfelt.

Thank you. I never ask that people agree with me, but I appreciate when people know I’m not arguing for some ulterior motive.
