John E. Peterson, who represented Pennsylvania's 5th District in Congress from 1997 until his retirement in 2009, is saying dump the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

(snip)

This morning, btw, five Republican state representatives filed a bill abolish the Turnpike Commission. HB 2134 would transfer the transfer its assets and functions to PennDOT.

And did you know that the Turnpike was designed so that the straightaways could be negotiated at 102 mph and the curves at 90?

Certainly for 18 wheelers, there are many turns on the PA Turnpike that are not appropriate to try to negotiate at 90 mph.

A turn at 90mph sounds interesting, and like a recipe for disaster.

Anyone who has driven the Penna. Turnpike can tell you first hand that this is BS. The top design speed of the Turnpike was 70 mph tops. Most sections are 65 mph and the speed limits through the mountains in western Penna. are 55 because of the curves on the road.

If you are going 70 you are snarling traffic. A state trooper will not even consider writing a ticket for someone going 70.

Yes most interstates were.

The only problem is most Pennsylvania drivers are too scared to even do 65, so they putt along at 55 - even in the left lane.

I95 going south was forced into a single lane at rush hour yesterday (5pm) going around the airport.

My daughter said she never saw such a mess. Not doing ANY work mind you, just the red cones set up to block traffic.

I told her to call Rendell. Alot of good that'll do!!!!

Try doing 90 eastbound going down the mountain after the Allegheny tunnel, and you will end up being a statistic.
