Mosley drops bid to be challenger to U.S. Rep. John Barrow Vidalia doctor was preparing quest to challenge Democrat John Barrow

A Republican who said he'd spend $500,000 of his own money in an effort to oust U.S. Rep. John Barrow in 2010 has quit the race.

Wayne Mosley, a Vidalia doctor and former Army lieutenant colonel, e-mailed the news to his supporters Thursday.

Mosley widely had been considered the strongest of three GOP would-be challengers to Savannah Democrat Barrow.

"I think so," said Savannah political consultant David Simons, "especially because of the money."

During the past two years, Mosley often spoke to various groups around the state, but especially in Barrow's 12th Congressional District. He said a legal action against him by officials of a Vidalia hospital "will take up my time and money for the foreseeable future."

"As shocking as it may sound," he said, "I'm accused of breaking my contract because I obeyed an order to serve our country in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Then under contract to practice at the hospital, Mosley served in both countries after being activated from the U.S. Army Reserves.

"If ordered to deploy," he said, "you have two choices: Deploy or go to Fort Leavenworth (federal prison). Either way, you're going away."

Mosley said defending himself will cost him too much time and money to run an effective campaign.

But letting reservists "be harassed and damaged financially for serving our country," he added, would "decimate" the reserves, he said.

Mosley's exit narrows the GOP field to Thunderbolt Fire Chief Carl Smith and Savannah Republican activist Jeanne Seaver.

Mosley supporter Ray McKinney of Rincon, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination last year, said Thursday he might run.

Barrow has won three straight races in the 12th and raised almost $2.2 million during the past election cycle. He received 66 percent of the vote last year against Republican John Stone.

If true, this reeks of a political hatchet job. Reservist Army lieutenant colonel, Wayne Mosley is being sued because he is the strongest Republican candidate to unseat Blue-dog democrat John Barrow in the 12th Congressional District in 2010.
