Apologies if the sources are questionable but there was almost no media coverage of this convention that I could find, or, at least, containing anything of not about McCain's speech.
Salon reports today:
As for those principles, well, it was left to John McCain to rally the troops. "You are a brave band of warriors," McCain consoled the delegates. "And you will be able to look back some day and say look, I was part of the Republican Party when times were the toughest. … It's hard trying to do the Lord's work in the city of Satan."
And, the "progressives" at Campus Progress write about McCain's speech:
Delivering his speech on Friday, McCain addressed the role he sees the College Republicans playing in the future of the party, the need to reach out to more diverse conservatives, and, like nearly everyone at the convention, the need to capitalize on new technology.“We are in danger of becoming a regional party,” McCain explained. “Republicans need to be more inclusive, need to include people whose values line up with [the] party, but maybe don’t agree on every single issue.”
McCain connected the need to reach out to the need for Republicans to improve their handle on social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook, a task he charged the College Republicans with handling, and one that most seemed to take to heart.
McCain is being vague, as most Republicans who say that deliberately are.
What are to be considered the core Republican values?
I vote for privatization, Constitutional rights, the Right to Life, and border security.
What are to be considered the expendable issues on which it is O.K. if Republican politicians "don't agree"?
I vote for unnecessary involvements in the Middle East, pandering to big corporations, polluting the environment, and "trickle down" economics in general.
I know, lets invite some communists and some gun confiscation advocates in..that’s the ticket.
